I haven't played a game of Standard all year, nor written about it, but it has still been impossible to escape hearing the conversation about Temur Reclamation. I follow just about every Magic pro on Twitter, and leading up to last weekend's MTG Arena Players Tour it seems all they could talk about was the dominance of the archetype. Now that the dust of the swiss rounds has settled, and Wilderness Reclamation decks make up half of the Top 8 that will be played next weekend, it's clear the deck's power was not overestimated.

tweet:1286683584623861760

Naturally the conversation has already turned to the potential of banning cards from the deck, with the namesake Wilderness Reclamation being a primary target. No matter what happens in Standard, the cat is out of the bag, and the card has made its way to Modern with its sights on taking over another format. On Sunday Magic Online hosted a Modern Qualifier for the Zendikar Rising Championship, and the 256-player event was won by none other than—you guessed it—Temur Reclamation.

The same player also used the deck to reach the Top 8 of the Modern Showcase Challenge the week prior. Following up a Top 8 run with a win in back-to-back highly competitive events is no fluke, and it's pretty obvious it's one of the best decks in the format—and it's only just getting started.

Today I'll cover the deck in detail, from the overarching strategy down to the individual card choices, and I'll provide a guide for playing and sideboarding the deck against the diverse Modern field. First I want to go back and examine the origins of the Temur Reclamation strategy in Modern, where it came from, and how it evolved to where it is today.

The Origins of Temur Reclamation in Modern

Wilderness Reclamation first caught my attention in Modern back in April, when a straight Simic version of the strategy emerged.

Containing more countermagic than any deck in Modern (or even any Magic deck in any format) than I had seen in years, the list stood out like a sore thumb. Building from a blue base of countermagic including full playsets of Cryptic Command and Archmage's Charm, the deck splashes into green for Wilderness Reclamation and its ability to essentially double the amount of mana available every turn—a great tool for a deck capable of playing almost entirely at instant speed and leveraging this mana on the opponent's turn. Green also adds Growth Spiral, which some have argued is even more egregious in Standard than Wilderness Reclamation itself.

Rounding out the deck as the only real win condition (and sorcery-speed spell) is Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, an inexhaustible source of card advantage and battlefield presence perfect for a control deck looking to play a long game. We've sure come a long way from Randy Buehler's Rainbow Efreet.

With a massive suite of countermagic backed by the card advantage of Fact or Fiction, (providing the first real home for the card since its reprint last year) and a full set of Mystic Sanctuary to keep the action coming, the deck emerged as a way to combat the three and four-color Arcum's Astrolabe control decks that had taken over the metagame. These decks were full of creature removal that was dead in the matchup, and gave this classic control deck an easy time. Without any real removal, however, it suffered against the creature decks that the Snow decks were designed to beat. Ultimately Reclamation wasn't able to survive in a balanced metagame, especially not after the arrival of companions and the rise of Lurrus of the Dream-Den

The Shift from Simic To Temur

The biggest weakness of a blue countermagic control deck like Simic Reclamation is resolved permanents that slip through the cracks, especially cheap plays that come down before countermagic can get online. Cryptic Command bouncing can help, but otherwise Reclamation relied on either Ice-Fang Coatl's deathtouch blocking or Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath simply overpowering them. That's a dangerous plan against aggressive decks that are designed to fight through intense opposition, and it's part of the reason why the deck could not really survive in that configuration.

An obvious solution is to splash into another color for hard removal, which Temur Reclamation has done with Lightning Bolt. It's a clean answer to many creatures, specifically the cheapest ones that get by countermagic, and paired with Mystic Sanctuary or Snapcaster Mage provides the deck with removal throughout the game. The deck has become much more well-rounded and is equipped for the realities of the metagame. Modern has its fair share of aggressive decks, like the emergent Izzet Prowess deck with Stormwing Entity, and problem creatures like Stoneforge Mystic, and Lightning Bolt goes a long way toward beating them.

Splashing into red and opening up the manabase comes with another advantage in that it enables Field of the Dead as a powerful late-game plan and win condition. It's reminiscent of Buehler's Stalking Stones, but upgraded for the new millennium. If Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath wasn't hard enough to deal with, Field of the Dead is truly impossible for some decks to stop, and it gives the deck even more inevitability.

Adding some utility lands, like Field of Ruin to stop troublesome lands from the opponent, and Blast Zone as a sort of Nevinyrral's Disk, helps hit the necessary seven unique lands for Field of Ruin while adding more capabilities to the strategy. A singleton Wrenn and Six can reuse these lands repeatedly to lock out opponents, or draw extra cards by recurring the cycling Ketria Triome. Wrenn and Six also adds another source of removal for small creatures, and can even function as a noncreature win condition if it's allowed to ultimate and cast a stream of Lightning Bolt

Reaching for the Sideboard

The sideboard of Temur Reclamation is understandably full of removal spells to help fill in the gaps left by countermagic in the main.

It's headlined by a full set of Aether Gust, which has been proving itself to be one of the best disruption spells ever. It has even been gaining attention as a potential maindeck card in Modern like it is in Standard.

I wouldn't go so far as to play Aether Gust maindeck in Modern Temur Reclamation given that the deck already has plenty of countermagic effects and has few ways to get rid of it when dead, but it's a go-to sideboard card against a huge portion of the field. In particular it's a great out to troublesome cards from decks like Prowess, Burn, Jund and Goblins, and is a real nightmare for the Gruul Ponza deck where it stops literally everything. It's also a crucial tool against Amulet Titan, where it can "counter" a Primeval Titan through Cavern of Souls.

Mystical Dispute is another powerful hoser against specific opponents, and will find itself increasingly important in the mirror matches that are likely to come, as will Veil of Summer.

Anger of the Gods is particularly impressive as a sweeper, and is likely to catch many opponents by surprise as it's an unexpected tool from a blue deck.

The Matchups

Vs. Azorius Stoneblade

Stoneblade decks have been on the rise since the Arcum's Astrolabe banning, and Temur is well-equipped to beat it. If Lightning Bolt can contain Stoneforge Mystic, their creature removal will weigh them down as they fight a similar countermagic game plan but with fewer tools. The biggest threat is Teferi, Time Raveler shutting down countermagic, but if that can be contained it should be relatively smooth sailing. Another issue is Shark Typhoon, which puts pressure on the bounce of Cryptic Command to deal with it.

I won't claim to be super confident in the sideboard plans for this matchup, especially because lists and opposing plans can differ wildly, but be prepared to fight counter wars and deal with threats.

Vs. Azorius Control

Against Azorius Control, which is on the rise with the printing of Frantic Inventory, Lightning Bolt can be removed to open up more room for control elements. I don't like Nexus of Fate in any of the blue matchups because it's so vulnerable to countermagic like Mystical Dispute.

Beware of lists with Spell Queller, against which I'd leave in a couple Lightning Bolt over Force of Negation.

Vs. Eldrazi Tron

Urzatron strategies were historically great against blue control, but ever since the banning of Eye of Ugin removed their late-game inevitably, things have shifted back toward blue decks. Now classic Tron decks have mostly disappeared in favor of Eldrazi Tron, which threatens blue with creatures, especially when backed by Cavern of Souls. On the other hand, they suffer greatly against Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath that dwarfs their creatures. They have no real permanent outs to it, so get it online and it should be relatively easy to clean up the game. Their biggest threats are Mazemind Tome and their planeswalkers generating card advantage, so stop them at all costs.

Vs. Classic Tron

Classic Tron has been making a bit of a comeback, but they have a tough time fighting through so much countermagic, especially Remand as a pseudo-Time Walk. The biggest issue is Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, against which the best plan is to simply counter it and suck up losing two permanents. Also, be aware of their sideboard Veil of Summer.

Vs. Izzet Blitz

The hottest deck in Modern right now is Izzet Blitz with Stormwing Entity, and its wealth of cheap threats is tricky for Temur. Lightning Bolt goes a long way here; otherwise, sideboarding in removal spells is crucial to stop their onslaught. This is another matchup where Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath is a huge issue for the opponent, so focus on getting it active and riding it to victory.

Vs. Jund

Jund has historically been strong against blue control decks, with sticky threats like planeswalkers (now including Wrenn and Six) and the troublesome Bloodbraid Elf that's naturally strong against countermagic. It's all backed by Thoughtseize, and they even have Assassin's Trophy to stop Wilderness Reclamation. A recurrable threat of their own in Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger is also a problem. That said, they do have a lot of relatively useless cards like Fatal Push and Lightning Bolt holding them back, at least in game one. They also struggle against Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath—just be careful of Cling to Dust

Jund decks often sideboard multiple Boil for a real blowout, so be aware of it at all times.

Vs. Goblins

Goblins with the Conspicuous Snoop, Boggart Harbinger and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker combo has become a real presence in Modern. As an aggressive creature-heavy deck it does present problems for blue control, especially backed by a set of Cavern of Souls. On the other hand, it's vulnerable to much of your sideboard removal, which should even things up.

Again, be aware of Boil, which if resolved will be very difficult to ever recover from.

Vs. Dredge

The toughest matchup for Temur Reclamation is Dredge, which can mostly ignore countermagic and get threats into play from the graveyard. In game one there's not much more to do than pray, or possibly take over the game with Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath backed by Cryptic Command. The sideboard does have a silver lining with Anger of the Gods and Ashiok, Dream Render to steal games. Luckily Dredge is rare these days, but if it does come back the sideboard would want more hosers.

Vs. Temur Reclamation (The Mirror)

The Future of Temur Reclamation

It's possible that Wilderness Reclamation's days are numbered in Standard, but it has a bright future ahead of it in Modern. It's a powerful mana engine that creates an advantage every turn, and eventually it buries the opponent when combined with things like Fact or Fiction that convert the mana to value. It's strong even if it just allows you to escape Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath while holding mana up for countermagic.

I started seeing people talk about it over the past couple weeks, but winning last weekend's qualifier is going to really show the world what it's capable of, so I expect this will be the beginning of a Temur Reclamation revolution in Modern.
