Playing a Planeswalker is among the most powerful things you can do in this era of modern Magic. They produce an advantage every turn without needing to spend mana, and they can often turn an entire game. Sometimes you feel unstoppable as you resolve a Planeswalker.

And sometimes you resolve Teyo, the Shieldmage.

I'll say this much: in a set with as many design and development blunders as War of the Spark, they certainly didn't break Teyo, the Shieldmage. He's really something... Flavorfully he makes Walls. They block, I guess. I suppose he's cost effective?

As noted professional wrestler and scowling enthusiast Brock Lesnar once opined, "You can't make chicken salad out of chicken s***." Let's see if we can prove him wrong.

The Game Plan

We're just trying to survive out here man. Thankfully, we've got an alternate win condition in Approach of the Second Sun, and a backup plan of attacking with defenders animated via Wakestone Gargoyle (mercifully a downshifted rare—God bless you Conspiracy). Our Plan C is to survive long enough to Divine Deflection a large Blaze, or perhaps a massive unblocked attack.

Fortunately, we're able to defend the fort pretty effectively. Our creatures all block quite well, and Perimeter Captain provides us a nice bonus for doing so. Several of our walls have some teeth, and attacking through them is a genuinely daunting possibility. Runes of Protection can also lock up the right board state, and if it's a dead card you can happily cycle. True, the ROPs only activate with white mana, but we've got more than we know what to do with. Warmonger's Chariot and Gauntlets of Light help some of our guys get in some big hits, and Landbind Ritual can gain us dozens of life.

The Rares

(Remember there's five here because the Planeswalker is uncommon!)

I'll say this for Kamigawa—it's got some of the best card names in the history of the game. The titles of the legends are all so damn cool, I mostly want to go back for a set just to get some more cool card names. Not only are the phrases cool, they just roll off the tongue in a very pleasing way. Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo isn't an All Star, but he embodies Teyo, the Shieldmage goals to a T. He blocks competently, draws some fire, and prevents damage that might otherwise be dealt to you and yours. A Shieldmage indeed. Or a Shield-Samurai anyway.

Magic's creatures used to be a lot worse. And back in the days of Mirage, my reading comprehension was similarly poor. The Mirage version sure makes Sunweb seem insane even by today's standards! Four mana, 5/6 flier, some dinky clause about what it can't block. Who cares! It's only upon closer inspection we see the rub: Summon Wall. Back then, it was just acknowledged that Walls had defender and thus couldn't attack.So the carriage turned back into a white flying pumpkin. Here though, Sunweb has as natural a home as it'll ever get. It blocks anything short of Colossal Dreadmaw, and if you get Wakestone Gargoyle going it's just a cheaper Mahamoti Djinn. Sunweb, after only 24 years your day has come! Teyo, the Shieldmage: making dreams come true.

Aside from our friend Sunweb above, most of the creatures in this deck are not what I'd describe as "fearsome." That seems like a huge liability, but Slaughter the Strong lets us turn that into an asset. Because our creatures are generally lacking in the Power Department, we should be able to keep the bulk of our board around while demolishing a bunch of our opponent's creatures.

Ahhh there it is. The moneymaker. Our main, primary win condition. All our deck wants to do is stick around for a while and tough it out. Approach of the Second Sun asks us to do exactly that! We don't have a ton of card draw, so it might take us a while until we draw it again, but it's all good! We've got time, blockers, and Runes of Protection. Bring it.

All you gotta do is let in a big attack with some open mana and Bam! Dead opponent. Or dead creature the opponent controls. It's important to note that Divine Deflection doesn't redirect all damage coming from one specific source, just an amount of damage you or your creature is taking. That can make this spell a game breaker. Make sure it's treated as such—this shouldn't be used to kill a 2/2. Every once in a while you've got a haymaker. Don't throw it like a jab.

Unsung Hero

We've got defenders in this list, but we've also got a couple cards that simply have a high toughness. Teyo's Lightshield, for example, can attack without trouble, but only has 0-1 Power. Well, when it's wearing Gauntlets of Light, Teyo's Lightshield is more like a Lighthammer. The Doran, the Siege Tower ability is a natural synergy with defenders, and we get to explore that effectively here. And nobody ever sees it coming.

I've heard it said that the best defense is a good offense. Teyo, the Shieldmage is unaware of that maxim. Let's keep him in blissful ignorance and approach the Approach of the Second Sun in peace.
