When Tezzeret the Schemer debuted in Aether Revolt, he was probably taken seriously... for about five minutes. And then, if memory serves, he was relegated to, "Well, he's probably insane in Limited." And then, "I guess he's fine." No love for the real Etherium Sculptor, even in our age of Cryptocurrency. For shame.

For this project, I knew Tezzeret the Schemer was finally going to get his time to shine, because his plus ability makes the little artifact Etherium Cell tokens. And what blue/black artifact-related things get more powerful based on our quantity of artifacts?

That's right. Affinity is back baby!

The Game Plan

Play lots of artifacts, and use the synergies to play efficient, evasive monsters. Between the various Food, Treasure, and Etherium Cell tokens, we'll have tons of artifacts lying around, making our affinity creatures extremely cheap. They'll provide tons of bodies for a devastating Masterful Replication, and Broodstar will party like it's the fall of 2003.

Our creatures are pretty solid at most spots throughout the curve. Baleful Strix and Contraband Kingpin hold the fort very well. Chief of the Foundry is a well-costed lord for our troops, and Frogmite should also be cost-effective. Foundry Assembler and the Myr Enforcer provide us with some fat, and we've even got a few evasive bodies between the land affinity Golems and Somber Hoverguard.

Our removal is decent! Drown in the Loch is one of our best cards and has tremendous flexibility. Bake into a Pie and Contract Killing are very inflexible, but they kill without restriction and leave us with some useful artifacts for the affinity count. Assert Authority and Metallic Rebuke provide some solid surprise countermagic. And just like the old days, Thoughtcast is always a nice one.

The Rares

Nothing too flashy here. It's an evasive body with moderate stats, and it comes with another decent body attached. I highly recommend getting either Myr Enforcer because it's fat, or a Baleful Strix to keep the value train chugging along. I don't think it's correct to call the Sphinx Summoner the best card in our deck, but there'll be many games we win because of its contributions.

Unfortunately, this guy didn't get anywhere in the old affinity days, because the artifacts took over and triple-blue was difficult to compile. If we can get this for three to five mana, we're probably doing ok. We've got 21 artifacts, so there's a solid chance we'll at least draw a card with it, and if we can draw two we're looking great. This was more a nostalgia pull than anything else. I really thought this could be something back in the day before Ravager Affinity pulled a Skynet on Constructed Magic.

My all-time favorite era of Standard was the Fall of 2003. The decks were UW Control, BR Goblin Bidding, and Affinity, which played a bunch of artifact lands, Frogmite, Myr Enforcer, countermagic, and Broodstar. It was basically like this: If you could resolve your Broodstar and protect it for a turn, your opponent was probably dead—you'd be attacking with an 8/8 flyer protected by countermagic, and maybe you'd Shrapnel Blast them or something. Then Darksteel came out, and Broodstar went extinct. But we're bringing it back baby! We've got so many dinky artifact tokens lying around that the Broodstar will be shining bright. Expect it to deal no less than one hundred damage to our opponents.

The floor on this for us is a pair of 3/3 golems at instant speed. That's not bad! It'll probably result in a dominant combat step, or maybe provide that last burst of power and bodies that lets us alpha-strike for the win. But let's dream a little bigger here. Imagine if you will, you've spent the entire game amassing a big pile of (seemingly) useless artifacts. Food, Etherium Cells, Treasure tokens. All just sitting around doing nothing. Then, all-of-a-sudden, you cast the Masterful Replication on your Chief of the Foundry, and your phone crashes because the calculator app can't handle counting up all the damage you're about to deal. Now we're talking! Sure, it's likely we'll be casting this for the golems. But it's in the deck to live the dream.

Unsung Hero

By my count, we've got 21 artifacts in the deck, and 19 of them can be cast (two are artifact lands). So if Efficient Construction is in our opening hand, we've got a game plan that incentivizes playing out our non-artifacts first, and then cast them with reckless abandon once we start scoring some Thopters on the house. It's tough to justify a four-mana enchantment that might do absolutely nothing. But the upside is we'll have a steady stream of evasive bodies to overwhelm the opponent with only a few turns of triggers. Much like the Broodstar and the Masterful Replication, we're thinking hard about the ceiling here, not the floor.
