Blazing Vortex is almost here, bringing new cards for all sorts of strategies! Everyone's chasing after the new Pot of Prosperity, and at the same time acknowledging that Virtual Worlds are getting more support with stuff like Virtual World Oto-Hime - Toutou. But I've got my eye on something a little different: the new Skull Servant support card Wightbaking.

It's really good!

Well, for Skull Servants at least. Wightbaking can protect any Level 3 or lower Zombie from being destroyed, letting you discard Wightbaking instead. I guess you can use it to protect Uni-Zombie? But its more important effect is that if Wightbaking sent to the graveyard, it allows you to search for two Skull Servant centric cards and then discard ANY card you want. That's HUGE.

A lot of players may not know what the purpose of Skull Servants are as a deck. Luckily for you, I've studied the cards and I've come up with a way to play them. There's already a lot of good Zombie-type support cards and Level 1 support in the game, both of which can serve Skull Servants. So it was really just a matter of finding the right win condition.

Oh wait, King of the Skull Servants is the win con. Think of it this way: it's basically the equivalent of Gren Maju Da Eiza but wayyyyyy more searchable!

The Wight Family

Let me give you a quick rundown of what the Skull Servant support cards do. They were released in several different eras of Yu-Gi-Oh's history, so it's totally understandable that nobody really remembers them.

The ORIGINAL Skull Servant was from Legend of Blue-Eyes. It's just a vanilla Normal Monster, and I'm sure we all laughed at it when we were kids, noting how weak and pathetic this card was. But for some reason it made multiple appearances through the anime series, and even showed up in the original manga! Maybe the creator of the game himself knew the little guy had potential.

"A skeletal ghost that isn't strong but can mean trouble in large numbers." Skull Servant flavor text has definitely aged well; the strategy as it stands today is all about making your skeleton horde work together.

Even though Skull Servant just a vanilla, it's still important to play because you need it for the effect of Wightprince. It's also a name for other purposes in the theme. And since it's a Normal Monster, you can bring it out with Unexpected Dai.

The King of the Skull Servants is the main focus of the archetype, gaining 1000 ATK for every Skull Servant in the graveyard. Remember, every monster that's part of this theme has a built in effect saying it's treated as "Skull Servant" while it's in your graveyard. So now, years later, we've got plenty to work with and lots of cards to fuel the King's attack power.

In addition, if King of the Skull Servants is somehow destroyed by battle, you can banish another Skull Servant to revive it.

26732

The Lady in Wight is the queen of the deck. It can be an important presence on the field because it make your other Level 3 or lower Zombies immune to spells and traps, and even protects them from battle. But again, you largely play it for Wightprince's effect.

Wightprince is well… the prince of the strategy, and one of the absolute key cards to your game plan. It's got two effects and none of them are limited to one activation per turn.

If Wightprince is sent to the graveyard, you can send the original Skull Servant and The Lady in Wight to your graveyard. That means you're putting three Skull Servant names into the graveyard. Its other effect, which was very weird to me for a very long time, is that you can banish Wightprince, along with two other Skull Servant cards, to special summon King of the Skull Servants from your deck.

Why would you want to give up a potential 3000 ATK to summon the King of the Skull Servants? Why are both of those effects not restricted to once-per-turn activations? Is the goal to send Wightprince to the graveyard multiple times? Maybe someday if there was a Link Monster with an effect similar to Leviair the Sea Dragon, you could abuse this even more.

Fun Fact: You can see the Skull Servant family in lots of card art throughout the years, like There Can Be Only One and Quarantine.

Wightmare kind of seems like Skull Servant Aunt or Uncle, and it's a strong addition to the deck. By discarding Wightmare you can either Special Summon a banished copy of The Lady in Wight or King of the Skull Servants, or return a banished Skull Servant, or another Wightmare to the graveyard. In doing so, you'll of course land Wightmare in the graveyard as another "Skull Servant" name. This effect isn't once-per-turn either, so you can use multiple copies in one go.

Basically, Wightmare an extender or a free Special Summon. It's one of the core cards you want to search for with the new Wightbaking along with Wightprince. You've probably noticed the synergy: Wightprince will banish The Lady in Wight, while Wightmare can Special Summon it back! After using both effects you'll have at least two Skull Servant in your graveyard - Wightbaking and Wightmare with King of the Skull Servants on the field from Wightprince and The Lady in Wight to protect it.

Wightprincess was the second to last addition to this theme. When you Normal or Special Summon her, she can send Wightprince, and specifically only Wightprince to the graveyard. Once again, that effect isn't once-per-turn, so it could see some abuse. But I personally don't play it, since there's many better Normal Summons I'd rather go for; stuff like Gozuki or Uni-Zombie.

You can also send Wightprincess from your hand or field to the graveyard, on either player's turn, and in any phase, to lower the ATK of all monsters on the field by 300 points time their Level or Rank. That effect can definitely help you push through damage in combination with King of the Skull Servants against a high-Level monster, and the fact that it's the only Light monster in the searchable range of the theme could be useful in some combos. But I wouldn't play more than one, since you only play it for niche scenarios.

The Wight Plan

So that's the goal. Make King of the Skull Servants really huge by putting lots of Skull Servant and "Skull Servants" into the graveyard.

But how do you get there? What do you do with all these Special Summoning effects? Why does Wightprince banish the all-so-necessary Skull Servant to summon the King of the Skull Servants? And then I remembered a very obscure interaction with an old card that you'll see in the presented deck list: Doomsday Horror might just be the key to winning with Skull Servants.

Or at least make King of the Skull Servants really big.

Doomsday Horror got two effects, but it's the second one that's relevant: if it gets destroyed, you return all banished Dark monsters to their owners' graveyards. Why does that help Skull Servants? Well, it puts back all the Skull Servant cards you banished by resolving multiple Wightprince effects. Which means it can instantly get you as much as 9000 ATK for King of the Skull Servants!

How do you "destroy" it? Well, you'll use Union Carrier to equip Doomsday Horror to any Dark or Fiend monster you have. Then Link the equipped monster away for another card. Equip cards are treated as "destroyed" if the monster they're equipped to leave the field, and since the effect of Doomsday Horror is mandatory, it will trigger to put all the Dark monsters back in their graveyards.

That's one of the end goals for this Skull Servant concept. Since the theme doesn't set up any sort of interaction on your opponent's turn, you would want to just try and break your opponent's board, set up a HUGE King of the Skull Servants and just ONE PUNCH your way to victory.

That's doable because this deck has so many Special Summon effects, so you can Link Summon again and again. You'll generally summon Knightmares to pressure cards on the field, and you have options like Pentestag and Geonator Transverser to position yourself to do damage. The new Link-5 monster from Blazing Vortex, Underworld Goddess of the Closed World, can also help get rid of opposing monsters as put more damage on the board.

To get there, you'll need to Special Summon a lot. Maybe even discard the cards you have in hand, since you want them in the graveyard anyways. Knightmares help you do that, as well as the Danger! monsters and others. If you somehow couldn't get to even one copy of Wightbaking or Wightprince, you can easily set up Curious, the Lightsworn Dominion to help send it. Or summon the Level 8 Synchro Chaos Ruler, the Chaotic Magical Dragon and mill five cards by using Shiranui Solitaire and Uni-Zombie.

There aren't many combos with specific cards in this type of deck, since it's built go second and break boards. That means it's all about how you adapt, and how you choose to approach all sorts of game states.

Here's a concept list I put together.

Something that I do when I'm building decks, is start with 60 cards, and then work to whittle the build down as much as I can. Just like how a sculptor creates a smaller statue from a larger piece of marble.

But at the same time, in a strategy like this where you don't necessarily want to draw cards like Skull Servant or The Lady in Wight, a bigger deck with more cards you want to see could be optimal. Maybe the deck can even work with just two copies each of Skull Servant, The Lady in Wight and King of the Skull Servants?

There are just so many possibilities for this kind of deck.

Maybe splashing a package of Quick Launch and Rokket Tracer could work here, to help make the Level 8 Synchros. Rokket Tracer effect does lock you into Dark monsters for your Extra Deck summons for the rest of the turn, but it could be manageable.

Even something like Quickdraw Synchron could have potential, to help discard a monster and get you a free Special Summon; in the case of Quickdraw Synchron you could mill a card with Tuning to search for it. Quickdraw Synchron opens up possibilities for Crystron Halqifibrax combos too, as well as cards like Junk Destroyer to break boards.

Since this is largely a Level 1 deck, you can even play popular Rank 1's like Drytrons, stalling a turn with Kikinagashi Fucho or going for Lyrilusc - Assembled Nightingale to make Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder more easily. You might even be able to run Bujinki Ahashima to help make those Rank 1s while popping a spell or trap.

All in all, I don't even know if this is the "correct way" to play this strategy. It's probably going to struggle in this kind of format at higher levels of competition, with cards like True King of All Calamities being such a party pooper. But I wanted to share my thoughts on it, because I can definitely see Skull Servants being a potential threat in the future.

If Gren Maju Da Eiza can almost win a YCS, Skull Servants probably can too, when the format doesn't expect it.
