In a remarkably feel-good story, Magic: The Gathering Youtube personality The Professor has raised over $122,000 in a massive, impromptu fundraising event benefiting Trans Lifeline, an organization for trans and gender-nonconforming people in crisis and the first transgender crisis hotline to exist in the United States and Canada.
The result of massive efforts to raise funds for a noble cause.
According to the blurb on the donation page:
[Trans Lifeline provides] culturally competent services to Trans and gender nonconforming people in crisis; We work with stakeholders within and without the Trans community to end the plague of Trans suicide; We empower Trans people to help other Trans people in the darkest moments of their lives.
For donating as little as $4 to this event, donors were entered into drawings to win a number of fantastic cards, sealed products and memorabilia from Magic: The Gathering. This included sealed boxes of various sets including Conspiracy and Double Masters, a full set of Commander 2019 preconstructed decks, and even the original art for Final Strike, a card from Portal.
The minimum goal of this fundraiser was $20,000, but as of the time of writing this effort has raised $122,112. This comes even after the close of the fundraising event, with people donating despite not being eligible to win any of the items donated to spur donors on. Noting that this fundraiser was organized as a last-second effort, we delight to imagine what the next fundraiser will look like with even more planning!
In times when the "Gathering" part of Magic: The Gathering is an aspect of the game that many people are still searching for, this news will surely bring hope to many people who need it. Fortunately, the fundraiser is still open for donations despite reaching and exceeding its $20,000 goal.
