Rules for this project are not only important for the creation and maintenance of these decks, but also for the maintenance of my sanity. By my count, Kaldheim gets me just over the 160 deck threshold, and believe me when I say that's a lot! (By the way, this is a great time for anyone who's not familiar with the rules and constraints of the project to check them out below!)

My very first rule states "Each Planeswalker that isn't foil, starts as a Planeswalker, is black-bordered, and doesn't have the word "Commander" on it gets one of these decks." When it comes to newcomer Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor, there's a bit of a wrinkle...he doesn't start as a Planeswalker! The front side is Valki, God of Lies! Buuuut, I thought it important to bend the rules just a bit in this case for two reasons:

  1. Valki, God of Lies // Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor is a MDFC, so you can choose which side to play. There aren't any requirements necessary to flip him over or turn him into a Planeswalker, like there are for Jace, Vryn's Prodigy or the like. So even though when you shuffle up the deck normally there won't exactly be a Planeswalker in the deck, you can have one if you want to.
  2. The last time we met Tibalt here in the project, the character's offering was so bad we had to resort to the 50/50 nature of coin flipping to give him the best chance of winning. Our devilish friend deserves a shot at redemption!

So Tibalt gets a deck. I've enjoyed the lore on this new Tibalt so far. It seems from reading his own ballad/journal entry that our mischievous friend, already inclined towards anarchy and mayhem, gets stuck by a Horrible Beast (aka Vorinclex, I'm sure), and the only way out of the Horrible Beast's machinations is if he does something wild and chaotic. It seems that his main path towards this anarchy is to steal the Tyrite Sword that can cut through the barriers between the different realms of Kaldheim and create a Doomskar (think: Ragnorak) where the realms all collide, specifically Immerstrum with its Demons and Berserkers. That's pretty villainous!

So for this Tibalt deck, we want to lean pretty hard on Demons and Berserkers. Thankfully, this new set gives us some fuel for the fire.

The Game Plan

By now it's pretty well documented that ya boy loves Sagas. I was quite taken with the Gold ones in this set, as I mentioned in my Kaldheim set review, so I was very interested in playing The Bloodsky Massacre. This incentivizes us to play a ton of Berserkers, so they make up a majority of our creature base. There's not much of a cohesive tribal component to Berserkers, but they do let us take advantage of the fun new Boast mechanic.

Tibalt—I mean Valki—is very interested in putting on the pressure early and attacking whenever possible. Our troops don't have the best stats ever, but our tricks and our pressure should alleviate any issues with size. Frenzied Raider is an early drop to keep an eye on. It can reliably grow past the size of the competition as the game goes long. Keep in mind, although you can only use one creature's boasting ability once per turn, you aren't restricted to boasting only once per turn if you have multiple boasters, so the Frenzied Raider can get big once your mana situation smooths out later. I'm not sure there's a better 2-drop in the deck than Bloodsky Berserker; we've got several cheap creatures (and some enablers like Hardened Berserker), so if we start playing multiple spells in a turn, the Bloodsky will get massive quickly and gain evasion. It'll be critical to locking down games.

Valki himself is a potent threat for the games where we decide Tibalt's services aren't required. Choose carefully which creature you remove; early disruption might be the call in some games, while taking the best threat is the trick in others. Just remember that he is a Mesmeric Fiend/ Brain Maggot and not a Yarok's Fenlurker. If Valki goes away, they will get their creature back.

The removal isn't the best ever, but it's still functional—we are a Black/Red deck after all. Former Limited allstars Bituminous Blast and Twinstrike can get us ahead on cards, Wrecking Ball and Dark Temper provide some slightly expensive catchall answers, and Kardur's Vicious Return is another solid Saga.

The Rares

A 3-mana 2/3 Deathtouch means that Varragoth will always trade, and his size means that it will be difficult for him to trade down. More likely, our opponent will have to trade multiple creatures for it, or something larger and more expensive. In either case, that's a win for us on rate alone! But Varragoth can let us dictate when that trade happens, because the Boasting ability is incredibly powerful. If we can get it off once, I like our chances in a game. Twice, and that feeling of invincibility starts to creep in. If we lose after activating this three or more times, we could never have won that game in the first place. Varragoth is nasty, and I'm excited to get some reps in with him.

Immerstrum Predator

This is more of a flavor inclusion than anything else, since Tibalt is leaning on the forces of the Immerstrum realm to kick stuff up, but he can become a very fearsome flyer for not too much mana or investment. He will make our Garna a bit less effective, but we get a huge Dragon out of the deal, so it's hard to complain! When the Berserkers are having trouble getting it done, well, they do make fantastic Dragon food.

I couldn't build a Tibalt deck without including his signature card from the same set! Be careful what you counter; if you waste this on some random thing, it might instead turn into a bigger problem. Try to think about what cards will end the game in the opponent's favor, and save the Trickery for them.

We're playing multiple Berserkers to take advantage of all the chapters on this one. I think if Chapter II ends up being a Night's Whisper or an Ambition's Cost, the Massacre is a successful one. Additionally, keep in mind that Tibalt is expensive! It's hard to get to 7 in a deck that doesn't usually ramp up. Well, Chapter III can provide that ramp to get up the hill. Balancing the cards gained from Chapter II against the potential losses that would negate a potent Chapter III will be one of the harder decisions around this card, and part of what makes it an exciting prospect.

Unsung Hero

I'm a huge fan of the WoTC decision to print some Legends at Uncommon, ever since Dominaria. I think Legends are usually the design space where they decide to stow the weird, unique ones, and it's such a delight to have them at Uncommon instead of Rare. Kardur is a nasty customer! His stats are respectable, he sets up a combat in our favor, and keep in mind that his drain ability hits, no matter whose attacking creatures are dying. If we're back on defense and end up beating up their creatures, we get the drain. The method of death isn't important; attackers don't have to die via combat damage. So if they attack and we Twinstrike their team, we get the drain. The language there is the most interesting component of an already-cool newcomer. I'm excited to get people with it.
