These are the changes we got from Tibalt's debut to his second appearance in War of the Spark:

It's quite a statement, then, that despite all of these negative changes Tibalt, Rakish Instigator is much better, and saw significantly more play than its predecessor. Rough look for the Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded.

Anyway, it seems with two trips to Innistrad and a few other references otherwise, WotC has made an effort to make Devils a somewhat supported creature type. There isn't a ton, but there was enough to support a Planeswalker Deck. And it seemed like a pretty natural direction.

As Tibalt, Rakish Instigator famously told the rest of the Planeswalkers, "You tell 'em I'm coming… and hell's coming with me!" Let's see what hell brought:

The Game Plan

Nothing fancy here—this is classic mono-red. We're attacking to get in damage at every conceivable opportunity, and if that means sacrificing our troops, hey they knew what the deal was. Can't expect loyalty from devils anyway! And fortunately for us, many of them have death triggers that are helpful, even if it's only one damage. That adds up! And we're hoping that count gets to 20.

The bad news is our creatures are not terribly large or evasive. A lot of bodies will be colliding on the battlefield, so it's important that we play smart before throwing all the bodies into the meat grinder. First of all, we do have a solid little package of burn spells with Shock, Lava Coil, and Incinerate that can keep the board clean, and open up the lanes for devils to get in uncontested.

We also have a few tools to make use of the expendable troops. Spiteful Prankster might not want to get into combat—it throws damage around when things die, giving us some reach. But when we do attack with it on our turn, the Spiteful Prankster is a three-power first striker. Another Jump Start companion, Chained Brute is a massive 4/3 for two mana. The downside is we'll need to feed it to untap it, but we can get rid of creatures that were going to be blocked and killed anyway. Lastly, Vengeful Devil is a potent little number from Modern Masters that just requires a creature dying to get active, but we get a two-mana hasty pinger for our efforts which can be a strong effect.

Our best use of sacrificial Devils are tokens, made from Make Mischief, Dance with Devils, and Devils' Playground. These tokens all do a point of damage when they die—to any target—so keep that extra math in mind when setting up positive combat steps. Barrage of Expendables with Devil tokens can throw an awful lot of damage around quickly. Don't underestimate that damage.

The removal is pretty red. We don't have a massive amount of burn spells, but all those Devil tokens can throw damage around incidentally, and so can some of our actual creatures like Tibalt's Rager and Pitchburn Devils. We've got a Shatterstorm around to kill the heavy artifact decks, but in games where it's not needed we can just pitch it to equip the Murderer's Axe. So there are likely some big green creatures or fat rare creatures that'll give us some trouble, but otherwise we should be able to trade or wipe out most everything else.

The Rares

(Remember, because this planeswalker is uncommon there are five rares instead of the usual four.)

Players active around Shadows Over Innistrad will remember Sin Prodder as "the red Dark Confidant" during preview season. A nickname that lasted until juuuust after players actually got to jam games with the card. We shouldn't be surprised—Browbeat abilities are always extremely fondly received, despite scarcely being effective or even super fun to play. (They always just choose the mode you don't want them to pick!). Sin Prodder was no exception. Here though, it's a fine three-power menace creature for three mana, and hopefully it'll ping the opponent for some extra damage before it goes. In some cases it might draw us a four or five-drop that we can play later. It's no multi-format All Star, but here it doesn't need to be, and it'll play its role perfectly.

Boy is this guy a kick in the junk. Four-mana for 3/3 stats aren't impressive, and even haste doesn't do too much more to spice up the equation. But its ability is absurd. We can use Hellrider to force through so much incidental damage our opponent will be forced to block our dinky tokens or smaller creatures, helping us dictate the terms of combat. Its haste contributes to that even further. We'd love to see Hellrider every game.

We don't have a ton of card advantage generators, so a Bedlam Reveler on turn six or so could be huge for us. For those that haven't played it before, keep in mind that it's not pitch three to draw three. The whole hand goes, and then we get three cards. So if the hand is empty, it's all gravy. If we really don't want to get rid of certain cards, think twice before throwing it out there. The prowess can also add up due to some of our spells, and there's a bunch of other text on the card that it can be easy to miss.

Our weakest rare by far, but still. Four Devil tokens can ruin future combats. Four tokens that block and maybe trade with something while shooting other stuff on the way out is a significant play. And considering our other rares are three mana for oneDevil (Tibalt, Rakish Instigator or Make Mischief) or four mana for two Devils (Dance with Devils), six mana for four Devils is a nice bulk deal. Perhaps the Devils' Playground is secretly Costco? Maybe we should start calling this Planeswalker Kirkland Tibalt, Rakish Instigator.

Blaze is really strong. It can hit players, creatures, or Planeswalkers, and it scales with the game. This particular Blaze has flashback. And if there's one thing that's better than Blaze, it's two Blaze. Try not to burn this right away on something dinky, but understand that if you do it's not the end of the world since it can flash back later. A very strong spell.

Unsung Hero

On its face, Scourge Devil isn't the best deal. Five-mana 3/3 and it can't benefit from its own bonus… I guess it's a serviceable body. However, we're paying for the whole text box here, and Scourge Devil ability to unearth is what earns it some huge points for us. Combo'ing with Hellrider and some Devil tokens, the Scourge Devil can set up some (lowers sunglasses) hellacious combat phases that'll foreshadow the end of the game.
