While some people are going to focus on Standard in the first couple weeks Kaldheim is legal on MTG Arena, it won't be long until Historic is once again at the forefront of many players' minds. I'm already there. It's the format I've both played the most over the past year, and had the most success playing.

Since the format is larger, with more powerful cards than Standard, it naturally will be more difficult for Kaldheim cards to make an impact on Historic. Still, I expect to see the format shift—and as we saw last year, you never know when something might get banned. Here are the five cards that I believe will make the biggest impact.

#5: Esika, God of the Tree//The Prismatic Bridge

Modal double-faced cards are very useful, and in the case of Esika, God of the Tree and The Prismatic Bridge, both parts of the card are quite important. Esika is a strong ramp creature already. Optimally you have other legendary creatures to help with the ramp, but that isn't necessary. If you draw two copies of Esika, God of the Tree, it's going to usually be a straightforward line of casting Esika on turn three, and The Prismatic Bridge on turn four.

The deck I picture this card fitting into plays five colors of mana. You must be able to cast The Prismatic Bridge to realize the power behind this card. Once you do get The Prismatic Bridge into play though, there is a ton of potential. There is not a ton of removal for enchantments seeing play in Historic right now, so you can reasonably expect The Prismatic Bridge to stay in play.

From there, it's just a matter of luck. Surely you'll run some expensive creatures and planeswalkers that can make a huge impact when found off The Prismatic Bridge, but you are also likely to have some hits that are less exciting. This is the biggest challenge. If you could guarantee you always reveal something like Ugin, the Spirit Dragon off The Prismatic Bridge, that would be awesome. This is clearly a powerful modal double-faced card, though it does come with restrictions, and doesn't slot easily into an already established Historic deck.

#4: Old-Growth Troll

Old-Growth Troll has a clear and obvious home in Mono-Green Aggro. There was a time when Mono-Green Aggro was among the top five decks in Historic, and this is the exact type of card that could push the strategy to the next level.

Consider the cards that mono-green decks already have access to: Llanowar Elves, Steel Leaf Champion, and Collected Company. (This is a Collected Company hit!) There is a good argument to be made that Old-Growth Troll is better than Steel Leaf Champion, but they are a similar power level, and both can be played on turn two alongside a Llanowar Elves. There's no reason not to run both.

Outside of Mono-Green, you could also bend your manabase a bit to accommodate Old-Growth Troll in Gruul, which is currently the most popular aggro deck in Historic. However, these concessions, like cutting Mountains and moving toward lands like Sheltered Thicket, could be an issue. The only reason I can't rate Old-Growth Troll higher is it is restricted to decks that can reliably cast it by turn three, and that eliminates many other potential homes outside of Mono-Green.

#3: Kardur's Vicious Return

There are already tier 1 decks in Historic that are focused on sacrificing creatures. Having something to sacrifice to the first part of this card isn't asking a lot. Cards like Stitcher's Supplier or Cauldron Familiar are going to be nice fodder for Kardur's Vicious Return.

Kardur's Vicious Return is strong enough it could fit in multiple decks. A card like Archfiend's Vessel could work in a more reanimator-style deck. Drakuseth, Maw of Flames or Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger stand out as creatures that could be discarded and then brought out of the graveyard during the final chapter or the Saga.

The card is clearly powerful, as each mode helps you work toward the goal of bringing back a high-impact creature from the graveyard. The trick will be figuring out the best way to bring everything together into a cohesive deck. This is the type of card that inspires brewing, but likely will require some time before it finds its best home. It can either be the centerpiece of a deck or be a supplemental piece as a one or two-of in already established sacrifice-based strategies.

#2: Valki, God of Lies//Tibalt, Cosmic Imposter

The reason to play this is because of Valki, God of Lies, and not the planeswalker Tibalt, Cosmic Imposter. Being able to cast Tibalt is a nice luxury to have, and certainly if you do end up getting to seven mana it will usually be the better option to play it over the two-drop. However, seven mana is a ton. Oftentimes in Historic, games are decided before turn seven, so enough about Tibalt.

Valki, God of Lies is a versatile black creature that could end up in a variety of decks. We've seen two-mana creatures that offer hand disruption before—Valki is reminiscent of Tidehollow Sculler, which saw a decent amount of play in its day. Valki is going to be fine on its own as long as you don't miss completely on finding a creature in the opponent's hand. Against decks like Azorius Control this will not be a good card because that deck plays very few creatures.

But Valki will be at its best when it's able to snag Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath out of the opponent's hand.

You get to exile the Uro and copy it yourself as early as the next turn for that sweet attack trigger. Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath is one of the most played cards in Historic, so this particular interaction is going to end up being very important to the value of Valki. If Uro gets banned for instance, Valki will lose some value. It is vulnerable to removal spells, though for just two mana it has tremendous upside.

#1: The Runes

Yes, technically I'm not talking about a single card, but for our purposes the Runes are going to serve mostly the same function. These are the three Runes I expect to see play because they are in the colors of the current Auras decks.

These decks can be mon-white, Orzhov, or Azorius, but typically play both Kor Spiritdancer and Sram, Senior Edificer.

While Auras decks aren't going to change that much by adding the Runes, I do think they will make a difference. The Runes serve as clear upgrades to auras that are currently available. I've played cards like Spirit Link in Modern Auras, and Arcane Flight in Historic. Paying one extra mana to draw a card is definitely worth it. We could see these played enough that Runeforge Champion starts to become an interesting option as well. However, if you add Runeforge Champion you can no longer play Lurrus of the Dream-Den as a companion, which does hurt. We'll have to see how the deck evolves.
