Now I get to show up with my deck and spend a few hours playing Magic.

Sounds fun right? Wrong.

It can be annoying when you spend more time shuffling your 98 cards than you do actually playing Magic.

But it's not always a turn four combo that kicks you out of a game.

Some of the time it's some oppressive piece of cardboard that says, "Nobody has any fun. Not even you, the person who paid money for this, because no one is going to want to play with you after you play this card." (I'm kidding... kind of)

Think about the cards you hate the most. Sure it could be Armageddon, but most of the time it's a pesky blue card. Though it's possible I'm projecting.

So here I am sitting at home on a Thursday instead of going out and playing Commander, and what have I decided to do? I've made a list of the ten blue cards I don't like seeing on the other side of a table.

I've tried to order these cards from least annoying to most annoying.

Coming in at number 8:

When Rhystic Study hits the battlefield, someone at the table basically announces that the Model UN is in session.

You lock eyes with the other player at the table and say, "If you don't pay for mine, I won't pay for yours." They nod.

You proceed to draw some cards off Rhystic Study, a few turns later they conveniently have one mana left over. They pay for your Rhystic Study.

Your alliance is over.

They've declared war.

Friendship over, they taught you what you needed to know.

If you're me, you try to form a new alliance while internally processing how much you hate in-game politics.

Rhystic Study is probably not the most annoying thing in the world, but having to listen to someone screech, "Trigger!" every time their opponent blinks just might be.

7. Desertion

This card is called Desertion because it's exactly what I'm doing when someone casts it.

Me: Hey mom can we get a creature or artifact?
Mom: We have creatures and artifacts at home.
The creatures and artifacts at home, that were secretly stolen from your friend:

The only thing I like about it is its apt flavor text, "First the insult, then the injury."

And yes, it's probably a good card, but being on the other end of it just sucks.

Like, not only do you stop my sweet spell, but you take it home with you too? That's not cool, Brad.

(You should probably play this card in your blue deck.)
(I can still hate it and think it's good.)
(You should buy it from TCGplayer, I hear it's a good site.)

6. Leadership Vacuum

This isn't the worst thing that your opponent could be doing. But they're still trying to suck the fun out of the game you're playing.

Leadership Vacuum sends someone's general back to the command zone. Could be yours. Could be anyone's. If you're as unlucky as you think you are, this spell is probably targeting you.

This feels particularly bad if you've already cast your commander a few times. And to make it worse, they draw a card too. Yuck.

5. Expropriate

Expropriate is enjoyable for exactly one person: whoever cast it.

It's very much a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-do-the-other-thing situation.

The player who cast it usually votes to take an extra turn, but if by chance they vote "money" they can regain control of a permanent another player stole from them. Every other player on the table is either responsible for giving the caster another extra turn, or allowing them to steal any permanent from them.

Sounds like someone gets to pay 10 mana and have all the fun.

Expropriate is another one of those cards that's really annoying when your opponent resolves it, but if it's that annoying you should join the dark side and play it too.

4. Stasis

This section encompasses Stasis and all Stasis-type cards. Nobody has ever looked at Winter Orb and said, "Gee, that looks like a party!" And Stasis is somehow even worse.

You don't untap anything. Not your creatures, not your mana rocks. Not your measly one land, so you can "save up" your untapped lands to cast a spell, like you can with Winter Orb.

The one upside to Stasis is it requires you to pay mana to keep it around, and the controller is skipping their untap step too. Cards like Seedborn Muse don't get around this. Stasis' controller must be able to play blue or bury it.

But when you pair it with cards like Smothering Tithe, it's hard to argue that the upkeep cost balances the effects of the spell.

If you play Stasis, I hope your week gets better and you stop inflicting this pain upon others.

3. Sunder

I have so many questions about this card, but the big one is why on earth was it printed? At instant speed, too?

This card is a bad time and honestly, you should feel bad for casting it.

Giving blue more of what is effectively land destruction was not wise, but we need to try and forgive the mistakes from Urza's Saga; it was a different time. But just because we forgive it, doesn't mean they are fun, fair, or friendly to play with today.

In my (not very expert) opinion, this card should probably be banned. Why does it exist? I'm honestly still not sure, and hope to never find out again.

The card in my number two slot should drive home why I feel this way.

2. Cyclonic Rift

I know what you're thinking. You expected to see Cyclonic Rift on this list, but I bet you expected to see it in first place.

Cyclonic Rift is a super annoying card. Like Sunder, you're resetting the game with an overloaded Cycling Rift. But unlike Sunder, you're sending everyone else back into the stone age while you're sitting pretty.

I genuinely dislike games that involve Cyclonic Rift, and would prefer if my playgroup banned the overloaded mode on the card.

With the cards I've disliked the most so far, my reasoning has been that they're not fun for me. I don't just mean I don't find them fun to be on the receiving end. I mean I don't find joy in casting them either.

Casual games of Commander (for me) involve people having fun, and me playing with my friends. If I've taken away their board, effectively restarting their game, while I'm completely unaffected, nobody really gets to do anything. If you were going to kill them that turn anyway, then cool. But you didn't need Cyclonic Rift to do it.

I don't think they can ban half a card, but the overload portion of Cyclonic Rift makes for an awful play experience.

1. Narset, Parter of Veils

Ten words, 43 letters. Say it and I'm (definitely not) yours:

"Each opponent can't draw more than one card each turn."

Narset, Parter of Veils static ability is annoying in the best of times.

In a Commander game with multiple opponents (i.e more things happening) and more permanents, it's easy to forget about Narset, Parter of Veils.

While I find Narset, Parter of Veils to be mildly irritating, players usually have enough creatures to attack it down so it's not around for too long.

However, if its controller manages to have it in play and cast a Wheel of Fortune, Memory, Windfall, or basically any card that makes you discard your hand to draw a new one—everyone but the person who owns Narset, Parter of Veils is in for a horrific time.

You'll discard your hand to draw one card, while the person that controls it is allowed to redraw to a full grip.

If they're able to repeat this process in the same turn, you'll discard that last card and draw no more.

Personally, I don't mind if my opponent plays the Windfall/Wheel of Fortune cards or Narset, Parter of Veils. But when they put both in the same deck, I check out.

Most of the time I'm cool with whatever my opponent wants to do. If they're having fun, I'm happy for them. But some of these cards/combinations of cards can suck the fun out of a game and just make it oppressive.

As a generally competitive player, it's hard for me not to look at broken cards and tell you not to play them. But unless it's competitive, casual Commander should be a fun and enjoyable format. Cards like Stasis, Sunder, Cyclonic Rift and Narset, Parter of Veils (in a Wheel of Fortune-style deck) aren't really fun or enjoyable, and that's why they're the most annoying cards to me.
