Last time we met Ugin, we maxed out his colorless flavor by focusing on the devoid Eldrazi. One might think given its cost reduction for colorless spells, new school Ugin, the Ineffable might be a better look for those kinds of shenanigans. However, there was a niche rules interaction that made me immediately bookmark new Ugin, the Ineffable for something else.

That niche interaction? Casting morphs costs two less. Ohhhhhhhhhhh hell yeah. We're definitely doing that.

The Game Plan

Keep the opponent guessing with a never ending series of mystery boxes that attack for two… until they don't. Generally speaking, I'd avoid playing our best morphs first, but there are several we'd like to put a priority on—especially Skirk Commando and Shaper Parasite. They can secure us an early board advantage. My favorite turn four morph is the Pine Walker, who can flip on turn five when we attack, presenting a massive threat.

Our biggest strength is that we get a bunch of hidden information, and there's some nasty tricks to make our opponent second-guess themselves. The aforementioned Skirk Commando and Shaper Parasite wipe out early creatures on the other side. Serpentine Basilisk gets a massive trade up. Mistfire Weaver offers some excellent protection. Icefeather Aven can dominate the board, and provide a solid little offensive threat. (Don't be afraid to just get the Gaea's Skyfolk mode on this guy—in the right matchup, getting in the evasive beatdown early can be very clutch.)

We also get the aggressively costed Ugin's Construct—and at only four mana, the odds are strong our board is only a colorless morph. Remember, we want that guy on the board as early as possible. Ugin, the Ineffable other two creatures, the Scion of Ugin and the Ugin's Conjurant, should come out later when they can help close the game out, although the Ugin's Conjurant can be an acceptable two-drop for a deck that wants to save most of its plays for turn three.

The tricks here help us take advantage of manifest—the other colorless, face-down creature mechanic. Secret Plans is an all star, boosting our toughness and keeping the cards flowing for our morphers. Reality Shift should be reserved for bombs on the other side. Displace and Temur Charm aren't the best ever, but they can get the job done in the right circumstances. Turn, Winterflame, Master the Way, and Vengeful Rebirth are somewhat situational, but they also keep the cards flowing, and can snowball advantageous positions. We'll almost always be happy to cast them.

Lastly, we've got some spicy tricks just for turning cards over. Essence Flux and Illusionist's Stratagem are ideal for simply turning over the goods. If you've got a Snowhorn Rider or a manifested Scion of Ugin, we generally don't care about when we flip those over. They don't have abilities to trigger or the like. We just want them face-up so they can smash face. The Essence Flux and Illusionist's Stratagem help facilitate that, so we can make use of our big beaters.

The Rares

One of the more exciting cards from Khans of Tarkir, the Rattleclaw Mystic is a great mana accelerant. We should feel no shame about casting it face-up to jump us up the curve a little faster. But if we can play it as a morph, the mana burst we'll get from flipping it a turn or two later can prove invaluable. Rattleclaw Mystic isn't flashy, but its presence and our winrate will probably have a correlation.

It never hurts to have a Mahamoti Djinn sitting around for us. It's huge, evasive, and can hold the board down. Oh, and it can also turn face-up to Evacuation our opponent's board during a critical attack. I'll play this 1000/1000 times.

This guy gives us two bodies, then lets us use our morphs to dominate the board, giving us some extra value for turning our critters face-up. Morph can be tough sometimes, because we're spending our mana on a creature we've already played, slowing us down some. Eliminating our opponent's creatures is a fine consolation prize. Snowhorn Rider gooooooo!

Khans of Tarkir Limited All Star gets another shot at life here. Morphs are mana-hungry entities, so we'll want to make sure we keep getting land drops. When it comes down early, Trail of Mystery will all but ensure we don't run out of lands to play. In the games we don't see it early, or hitting drops isn't a problem, the size boost we'll get for our morphs make combats tough to lose. If there's one card we could put in our opening hand every game, it would be Trail of Mystery.

Unsung Hero

In the days of Alara Block Limited, Vengeful Rebirth was on the shortlist of my favorite cards. Sure, it's a little pricey. But the ability to rebuy our best card, while also hopefully killing one of our opponent's strongest threats, is a fantastic deal. It helps that some of our morphs are on the more expensive side—why we're morphing them to begin with!—so even if Vengeful Rebirth is our turn six play, it stands to reason there'll be something juicy to get back with it. In games where we have Vengeful Rebirth, don't be afraid to morph that early Thousand Winds. If it gets killed, we can bring it back with upside! Vengeful Rebirth is a great option to sit on, and connecting with it feels fantastic.
