The Creator Pokémon is coming back to the Pokémon Trading Card Game, and they are bringing an all-new mechanic with them!

Earlier today, The Official Pokémon Youtube channel released a trailer showcasing the new mechanic being introduced for the Pokémon Trading Card Game: VSTAR. VSTAR is a new type of Pokémon that evolves from a Pokémon V to make an upgraded form! Like the GX cards from the Sun & Moon series, VSTAR Pokémon have a once-per-game ability in the form of VSTAR Power, which will likely shape how the game plays and how players build their decks.

The only Pokémon VSTAR revealed so far is Arceus VSTAR. Like a Charizard VMAX (swsh3-20), Arceus VSTAR evolves from Arceus V, but it is only worth two Prize cards if defeated instead of three. While Arceus VSTAR only has one attack, it is incredibly strong, doing 200 damage and attaching up to three basic energy cards from your deck to your Pokémon V. The real power of this card, however, is in the card's VSTAR Power, Starbirth, an ability that allows you to search your deck for two cards and add them to your hand.

As the first preview of VSTAR, Arceus is definitely living up to their God-level power and might be players' first steps back toward the power level of cards like Arceus & Dialga & Palkia-GX (sm12-156). Whether this will replace the VMAX Pokémon we have seen in the TCG so far or will be released in sets alongside the other mechanic as an alternative is unknown at this time.

More information will likely be on the way, given that the next Japanese Pokémon set releases on January 14, 2022 and is called Star Birth—just like Arceus VSTAR's Power. While the next international Pokémon TCG set is Fusion Strike, releasing in November 2021, the Pokémon Legends: Arceus video game releases worldwide on January 28, 2022 and could be the perfect way to introduce international audiences to the new VSTAR Pokémon!
