If you play Magic: The Gathering, there is a good chance you are aware of Pioneer but haven't had the opportunity to dive in. This article is for you!
In late 2019, Wizards of the Coast announced the creation of a new format called Pioneer. Pioneer took inspiration from the player-created format Frontier, which was designed as a cheap and convenient format for players who wanted to use their rotated Standard cards. Frontier encompassed sets between Magic 2015 and onward, using the M15 frame as a reference for legality. In this way, it was similar to Modern, which uses an earlier change of card frames as its cutoff point.
Since Pioneer's announcement, Frontier sees little play with players jumping to the officially supported format.
For new players, Standard is the easiest way to jump into the game due to its narrow card pool: only cards printed in the last two years are legal. As a result, it offers a smooth path into the game since it allows you to focus on fundamentals. Standard rotates every year to keep the format fresh and exciting. As a result, the Standard cards you own will become illegal in the future, which can be frustrating.
Pioneer is an in-between point for players who are looking for more ways to use their collection once cards rotate out of Standard. Like Modern and Legacy, Pioneer is a non-rotating format, which means a Pioneer deck you buy now will remain legal indefinitely. At the same time, because the card pool is smaller than Modern and Legacy, a deck that was strong enough for Standard will also be able to compete in Pioneer.
If you are not one for brewing, this is a great way to keep playing your favorite Standard deck. Pioneer can be whatever you want it to be, and most of the work is done if you are coming from Standard.
All Standard-legal sets from Return to Ravnica forward are legal in Pioneer. That means if you your old Standard deck was legal at any time after September 27th 2013, it's legal in Pioneer, unless any of its cards are on the Pioneer ban list.

The biggest attraction to Pioneer is the omission of fetch lands. These often play a pivotal role in Modern and Legacy, creating intricate play patterns and a high financial barrier to entry. Because they're banned in Pioneer, the format is a fantastic entryway to affordable competitive MTG—plus, there's far less shuffling every game.
During the early days, Wizards of the Coast employed a different approach to banning cards to aid the growing format. Instead of publishing the bans and unbans on the usual schedule, the company decided to announce the bans without any prior communication. Often these bans occurred weekly, and WotC used the rapid changes as an experiment to see which cards were too powerful for the format. This meant that in the first few months of Pioneer it was difficult for players to settle on one particular archetype, as there was no guarantee that WotC wouldn't ban a card from that archetype next week.
Since then, the format has stabilized, and WotC has adopted a more traditional, conservative approach to banning cards.
There are a handful of staples that are worth keeping in your collection or picking up for future usage. A good barometer to see if a card has Pioneer potential is to look at its performance in Standard. If it's good for Standard, it's likely to be good in Pioneer too.
Thoughtseize saw extensive play both times it was legal in Standard and is a well-known Modern staple. Extending to Pioneer, Thoughtseize is the premier discard spell and one of the best things you can do in the early game. At one point, there were calls for the sorcery to see a ban due to its cheap cost and powerful effect.
Despite these complaints, Thoughtseize plays an important role within the Pioneer landscape. Often you'll play Thoughtseize to combat spell-heavy strategies such as Oops All Spells, Lotus Combo, and Jeskai Lukka as a way to disrupt combos that would otherwise cause you to lose the game.

Mono-Black Aggro is the ideal shell for Thoughtseize, as you can couple the discard with pressure, which is always a recipe for success. You can also expect to see Thoughtseize in Esper Control, Orzhov Auras and in Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath builds as an important piece (sometimes the only piece) of early interaction. Thoughtseize is a compelling card and will remain an evergreen card of the format.
Thanks to Magic 2015 and Dominaria, you can run both of these mana creatures in the same build in Pioneer. Mana acceleration is a powerful approach to pull ahead in a game, and both of these serve that purpose well. Running four of both of these is a powerful way to begin your Pioneer journey.
Featured in Guilds of Ravnica and Ravnica Allegiance, this cycle will remain evergreen within the Pioneer landscape. Practically every deck with more than one color in it runs shock lands.
At the cost of 2 life, shock lands grant you access to two colors of mana the turn they come into play. Even without fetch lands, running these lands will provide excellent consistency for your decks. This is the best cycle of lands in Pioneer, and nothing in the future is likely to come close to their effectiveness.
Compared to other non-rotating formats, the price of entry into Pioneer is affordable. There are plenty of cheap Pioneer decks you can build that will offer a competitive edge in local and online events.
Gruul Pummeler is a favorite from Standard's past. Back then, not only was it an affordable option, but it saw plenty of success. Gruul Pummeler centers around the use of energy and the namesake card: Electrostatic Pummeler.

Akin to Modern Infect, Gruul Pummeler cares about dealing an immense amount of damage as quickly as possible.
Timing is a huge aspect of the strategy, as you can deal lethal damage from an activated Electrostatic Pummeler alongside a Temur Battle Rage or Become Immense.
Gruul Pummeler is far from linear, as you can attack with Voltaic Brawler or Bristling Hydra since you have so much energy stored up. Also, Harnessed Lightning is an excellent removal spell due to how effortless it is to accrue energy. Gruul Pummeler is ideal for anyone who is a format beginner, as it follows one plan incredibly well and teaches you how to combat effectively.
Orzhov Auras is another aggressive strategy with a low price point.

The objective of Orzhov Auras is to deploy cheap threats, equip them with powerful Auras, and turn sideways. It plays similar to Modern Bogles, where your curve is low so you can run pack as much action as possible.
It may be easy to default to an aggressive mindset, but the strategy boasts resiliency that can extend into the late game. Hateful Eidolon provides card draw both when your enchanted creatures die and when you remove your opponent's threats with Dead Weight. Lurrus of the Dream-Den is a free companion given the low the converted mana cost of the build, and enables you to recur permanents to keep the action going. Lastly, Sram, Senior Edificer provides card draw to ensure you can keep the threat density high. All in all, it's a great starting point for anyone who wants diversity in their game plan.

The goal is to deploy Llanowar Elves and Elvish Mystic to push out threats ahead of the curve such as Nissa, Who Shakes the World. Then, you cast a massive Voracious Hydra to either close out the game or break parity on the battlefield. There are various sideboard options, and Karn, the Great Creator makes them accessible game one.
There are plenty of ways to tailor the strategy to your metagame, but Mono-Green is inherently strong and has remained a feature of the format since its inception.
If you prefer something aggressive, Boros Burn is pulling in results due to its blistering pace against slower archetypes. Often the default for any unknown metagame is to go aggressive, and Burn achieves this with Lurrus of the Dream-Den at the helm.

The plan is to curve out with cheap aggressive creatures, deplete the opponent's life total, and finish them off with burn spells. But within this overarching strategy, there are ways to prolong the game if you are unable to close out quickly. Lurrus of the Dream-Den allows you to recast threats to push through those last points of damage.
Also, this is a great starting point if you want to extend into Modern Burn in the future. Pioneer's purpose is to narrow the gap between Standard and Modern, and Boros Burn is a fantastic example of how cards can overlap for other formats.
Like Standard, Pioneer can fall into a midrange slug-fest due to the card quality on offer. However, there is one midrange strategy that rules them all.

Niv to Light is incredibly unique and sees frequent play in Modern, but sees more success in Pioneer. What may seem like something cobbled together from a trade binder, Niv to Light is a robust strategy that never runs out of action.
Since Pioneer begins at Return to Ravnica, there is a swath of multi-colored guild spells that complement well with the namesake card, Niv-Mizzet Reborn. Plus, every gold card in future sets has the potential to fit in the strategy, making it an attractive option for players. It's versatile, powerful, and incorporates cards you may not know existed. Best of all, it's a lot of fun to play.
In typical circumstances, going down to your local game store would be the ideal approach to jumping into Pioneer. But with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this may not be an option for you.
Fortunately, Magic Online is a suitable way to jam a bunch of games to see whether the format is for you. Also, if you play MTG Arena, Pioneer will be available in the future in addition to Historic. So if you play a bunch of Historic or Standard, you are amassing a collection that can transfer into Pioneer once it's available on the digital client.
Pioneer remains in its infancy, yet there is a lot of charm in a format that remains uncharted. Pioneer is full of character and promotes creativity if you are willing to put in the time. Plus, it will only become more exciting the more cards are added to the format, and being involved from the beginning is a great way to amass a collection.
