Before you catch 'em all, you gotta know what's out there. Sword & Shield—Chilling Reign releases in one week, so today we're looking at all the Pokémon you can find in this new set.
Chilling Reign is based on The Crown Tundra DLC of the Sword & Shield video game, and features many Pokémon that were first discovered in that area of the Galar region. That said, a few old favorites from previous generations managed to sneak into this set as well, so you may be surprised by what cards you can pull!
Pokémon VMAX are currently the heavy-hitters of the Pokémon TCG. Chilling Reign will release with eight new Pokémon VMAX, each of which will also have a secret rare version.
The clear stars of the set are Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX and Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX.
Yes, that Pokémon is riding a Pokémon! Calyrex, the legendary "King" Pokémon, is a regal-looking psychic-and-grass type with a massive crown that dwarfs the rest of its body. It can speak, and once ruled the Galar region as a benevolent sovereign.
Glastrier and Spectrier are a pair of horse-like legendary Pokémon that Calyrex can fuse with in Sword & Shield, becoming Ice Rider Calyrex and Shadow Rider Calyrex respectively.
The other six Pokémon VMAX in Chilling Reign are:
In addition their normal and secret rare card versions, Blaziken VMAX, Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX, and Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX will each have a third version with alternate art.
Pokémon V evolve into Pokémon VMAX, but they also pack a punch all on their own. We're getting 15 Pokémon V in Chilling Reign, each of which will have a normal and a full-art version. Pokémon with asterisks next to their name will also have an alt-art version.
As you're opening Chilling Reign, be on the lookout for the alternate art versions of Galarian Articuno V, Galarian Moltres V, and Galarian Zapdos V.
These three legendary birds also debuted in The Crown Tundra, and differ significantly from their Kanto counterparts. Galarian Articuno is psychic-type that prefers to use its mental powers to hold itself airborn (why tire yourself flapping when you have telekinesis?) Galarian Moltres is a dark-type Pokémon with a black-and-magenta color scheme that burns with sinister energy. Galarian Zapdos is fighting-type, and while it can barely fly, its powerful legs let it run at 180 mph and deliver devastating kicks.
All three legendary birds are at once fresh and familiar, so their rare alternate-art cards will likely to be a hit among collectors.
Three other Pokémon will appear in Chilling Reign as secret rares: Bronzong, Electrode, and Snorlax.
Folks love shiny cards and first-generation Pokémon, so keep an eye out for Electrode and Snorlax. Snorlax in particular is a fan-favorite and will likely be one of the chase rares of Chilling Reign.
Here is the list of every other Pokémon that will appear in Chilling Reign. These will not be secret rares, so they should be relatively easy to obtain and collect.
Chilling Reign will release on Friday, June 18th. You can preorder sealed products from this set today on the TCGplayer Marketplace.
