Hello there, everyone! Maximum Gold's finally releasing this week, and today I want to bring you the deck that I think will see the biggest surge of play in the wake of the set's reprints. With key cards set to become more accessible, as well as some ongoing format shifts, Eldlich's place in competition is about to change.

The Eldlich strategy has seen sporadic success ever since its release back in April, due to the raw power of Eldlich the Golden Lord played in tandem with a number of power cards. But ever since the September Forbidden & Limited List dropped, it's seen almost no real success in online events, and it's fallen off the radar in Remote Duels. Which raises the obvious question: why?

The answer's no mystery: when you combine the price wall gating off the supporting engine, as well as the fact that Eldlich the Golden Lord alone was over 100 dollars for a long period of time, with the fundamental problems the deck struggles with even when it's successful, you get a recipe for disaster. However, thanks to Maximum Gold that range of barriers is starting to collapse; the deck's going to be nowhere near as expensive in a week or two, and that's going to mean more players are going to run it, increasing representation.

It also means more players are going to be testing and refining their builds, which might help the Eldlich deck overcome some of its fundamental challenges.

Golden Reprints

To me, one of the greatest things about reprinting expensive cards, is that players who normally don't have access to them finally get to play them. It's especially fun for me, because it's quite common for those expensive strategies to be played inefficiently as more casual players pick them up, and you'll see a dip in their win ratios.

Take Infinite Impermanence, which is getting another reprint in MAGO (Maximum Gold). A playset of Infinite Impermanence was important to any player who wanted to compete in tournaments, but it was locked behind a $120 paywall. That often meant casual players weren't going to want to invest in them, and would often lose to an opposing Impermanence just because it's such a super strong card. Well now with the MAGO reprint, Infinite Impermanence is going to be cheaper than ever. That's great!

At the same time, it won't magically fix the play errors less experienced duelists are going to run into when they start playing Infinite Impermanence. Cards like this have a learning curve that requires knowledge of opposing strategies, an understanding of chokepoints in combo sequences, and risk assessment skills to really master. All of it takes time.

That same principle will apply to Eldlich the Golden Lord. Sure, you can pick the deck up and start piloting it in minutes, but if you don't know how to play it properly you're going to be tallying up those losses for a while. I mention that to emphasize the importance of really investing the time, and not just the money, into improvement. So when you get those snazzy Eldlich the Golden Lord that you've been wanting you won't be taking infinite losses; you'll be crushing your opponent's dreams as you score fistfuls of OTS packs.

One of the things I'd highly recommend doing to boost your chances of sucess, is to read my "KISS" article as well as some of the other work I've done on deck building. Start from the basics, and make sure you have the foundation of solid play down pat, as well as an understanding of the Eldlich cards specifically, before you try anything too crazy.

Once you have a solid grip on the fundamentals, you can build on them and start to experiment. Take a look at a build I've been playing, and enjoying myself!

This deck's a good example of all the principles I've been writing about put to action. The build's very simple in its composition; you just want to summon Chaos Ruler, the Chaotic Magical Dragon as fast as possible. Doing so will set up your Eldlich traps, as well as getting you access to hand traps to help grind out the game for you.

Nothing flashy, no complex lines of play to memorize. You're just trading your low value defensive cards, for your opponent's higher value combo cards.

Going forward you can play cards like Infinite Impermanence here, since it's going to be significantly cheaper than it was before. That gives you even more avenues to shut down your opponent. If you wanted, you could add something like Trap Trick alongside Artifact Scythe. Artifact Sanctum was reprinted this past Summer, giving you even more options at low costs.

Maximum Options

The Eldlich cards need a solid secondary engine, to help get through the early game where you're not really doing as much. That's why I chose to include Rokket Tracer, Rokket Recharger and Uni-Zombie.

The Invoked cards are another extremely popular option. Thanks to Maximum Gold, Aleister the Invoker gets a shiny new art and a reprint. Magical Meltdown also included, meaning two key competitive cards are suddenly that much easier to get, lowering the cost of the strategy. From there, Battles of Legend: Armageddon has all the singles you really need outside of Invoked Mechaba so you're good to go.

The Invoked engine offers a concise, clear line of play for the deck that seeks to get you through the early game, giving you time to amass your grip of Eldlich cards so you can chip away at your opponent's resources in the late game. The symbiotic relationship has already seen big successes in the past, and with the format shifting towards decks like Zoodiac and Prank-Kids as Phantom Rage makes them more powerful, on top of the standard Dragon Link, Infernoble, and Dogmatika decks, the play decisions will be clear for you as the pilot.

The last engine I wanted to highlight for you all, is the Numeron suite. When the new Numeron cards dropped in Battles of Legend: Armageddon, players everywhere were screaming into the abyss that the game was over, and that we'd all have to welcome our new ZEXAL overlord. That hysteria didn't last long, as the public quickly realized how easily the Zexal lock could be beaten if it was respected. That respect is the key.

Fast forward to now, and nobody really thinks about the Numeron cards, for good reason. They're fragile, and only really offer small advantages in current metagames. However, the Eldlich cards let you play with a higher level of confidence, because Conquistador of the Golden Land can bypass cards like Forbidden Chalice or Infinite Impermanence on your Number S0: Utopic ZEXAL.

Simply chain Conquistador of the Golden Land to the Infinite Impermanence, then chain Eldlixir of Scarlet Sanguineto that, and resolve everything backwards. Destroying your own Number S0: Utopic ZEXAL might not seem like the best situation, but when it comes with the upside of literally not letting your opponent play, it's a worthwhile trade off.

There's also Zoodiac Eldlich, which leverages the consistency of the Zoodiac cards, alongside the power of the Eldlich traps. Similar to the other strategies mentioned above, they create a symbiotic relationship where both parties benefit from the other's strengths, and they tighten up the game, so their weaknesses have actionable solutions. Again, with Zoodiac Chakanine and Zoodiac Drident both appearing in Maximum Gold, you can expect to see more players experimenting with them.

Let me know over on Twitter what you're excited to see in Maximum Gold. There's a lot of good stuff in there for players of all levels, and budgets! I know I'm personally excited to get Link Monsters with Premium Gold Rare tech, they look amazing. Until next week!
