Magic had a really interesting September.

Zendikar Rising released on Thursday, September 17th. After spending a few days on Omnath, Locus of Creation, trying different versions of the deck all Sunday and Monday, my squad was arriving at what we thought to be an excellent version of the deck for the weekend. I was busy testing different sideboard plans to beat what the other Omnath, Locus of Creation people would be doing. I was excited to be on what I thought was the best version of the best deck.

By Tuesday my ability to care had disappeared completely. Between playing almost exclusively mirror matches on ladder and Wizards of the Coast announcing bans, I was off playing the deck any more. "We're just going to mulligan this week," I thought. "Obviously they're banning Omnath, Locus of Creation, the card is absurd. I'm not putting in all this effort just for one tournament on Saturday, the mirror is awful."

In Which I React to Last Monday's Ban

Monday's ban was a slap in the face.

Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath is no more of a problem now than it was a month and a half ago. If anything, it's actually less of one, because Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath entire rationale for showing up in last weekend's Omnath decks are:

  1. It's a broken mythic.
  2. It's on theme.
  3. It does some of the lifting vs control.

My entire plan when I still found Omnath, Locus of Creation interesting enough to play was to board out Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath for the mirror, and I expected to play the mirror almost all the time. At some point, why even have Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath in the main? If I really want them, I can bring them in later. Might as well pick up some maindeck equity against 70% of my opponents or whatever it ended up being. Considering Omnath, Locus of Creation made up that amount or more of the top decks in every Standard tournament last week, I think it would've been correct.

If anything, all it did was weaken the Dimir decks, because they no longer get an undercosted win condition that just needs you to play all cantrips and spot removal to function.

And more than its impact now is the impact it had two months ago, when we got our last round of bans. Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath was in all of the best decks during the Temur Reclamation era. It was clearly a problem when Growth Spiral, Wilderness Reclamation, and Teferi, Time Raveler got banned. And then it was all anyone was allowed to do throughout August.

Honest question, WotC: if you were going to just ban Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath three days into this Standard anyway, why did we have to watch 800-turn Sultai Mirrors for two months of the last Standard? If you'd pulled the trigger then, we all might have accidentally gotten a decent format.

Of course we're now in an era where Omnath, Locus of Creation is all anyone is going to be doing, again. After we just had a week where all anyone was doing is Omnath, Locus of Creation, to the point where we were told there'd be action in Standard before Zendikar Rising was even released.

But perhaps we can fight it?

In Which I Try Fighting Omnath

We can't go bigger than it, because the deck can basically win in any way it wants. It can build a huge board with Felidar Retreat, or deal damage directly with Terror of the Peaks, or mill the opponent with a Ruin Crab, or draw their entire deck and win with Thassa's Oracle. There really is nothing "bigger" than chaining Escape to the Wilds and Genesis Ultimatum to flip an entire deck into play. If there is, it will have to be of a similar caliber, and Standard will only be more degenerate, not less.

Perhaps we can go under it? Perhaps, but their goldfish is absurdly quick, meaning that even the aggro decks have to be built in a way that they can contain Omnath, Locus of Creation, and not the other way around. Once the aggro decks have to slow down to play, they run headlong into Omnath, Locus of Creation first triggered ability: Gain 4 life. Ever put an opponent in a bad position, only to have them play a Fabled Passage and not crack it so they get a free 8 life while they have a 4/4 in play to block?

Even if aggro decks can fight Omnath, Mr. Om-nom gets access to four colors' worth of sideboard cards. Spot removal, Storm's Wrath, and Elder Gargaroth are all on the table as reasonable ways to easily pick up percentage points against aggressive decks, and don't require much space to do it.

So then we turn to control. Four-Color Omnath lost Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, which let the deck grind against control. The Sultai decks did well against Omnath, Locus of Creation last week, right?

Nope, they actually had a losing record. Here's my quick illustration why:

This is all to say nothing about the fact that Omnath, Locus of Creation can play Mystical Dispute, and ramps so quickly that it invalidates their Mystical Disputes much faster. Add to all that they have to rely on much less effective win conditions like Ashiok, Nightmare Muse instead of Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, and I doubt control is the answer.

Rogues is, maybe, the one archetype that can stand up to them for a bit. Maybe it'll prove me wrong, but so far I've been relatively unimpressed. The problem is that Rogues needs the right mix of pressure and disruption. If they draw too many creatures, they aren't fast enough to win before Omnath, Locus of Creation recovers. If they draw too much disruption, the lack of pressure means that Omnath, Locus of Creation will eventually draw out of it with Escape to the Wilds or Genesis Ultimatum.

But hey, don't take my word for it, the #1 player on ladder also is having the same experience:

Can you fight it? In short, no. Maybe you can for a weekend, but once the Omnath, Locus of Creation players know how to beat the couple things that can stand up to it, they can adjust. If anything can poke through, it's because occasionally people will care about the mirror and something might peak at a 51% win rate against Omnath, Locus of Creation for a day or two.

So why wasn't it banned?

In Which I Explain Why Omnath Wasn't Banned

In short, it's abundantly clear that WotC is a business that makes a game, and not a game company.

Game companies rely on the strength of their game to keep players invested and playing to make money. For all the "new champions are always overpowered" nonsense that Riot Games gets, League of Legends is excellent at balancing their game and new champions, even if it probably means "less sales" in some abstract way. Dead by Daylight balances things right away, and nerfed one of the add-ons to their newest killer a few days after it was released because it was too strong.

WotC's motivation for what they ban or not ban is obviously not reflected in anything related to the metagame itself—only in what they think will help sell booster packs. If it were grounded in the data, there's no question Omnath, Locus of Creation would be gone after last weekend. Whoever is making the final call at Wizards is actively harming their game for short term gains.

What frustrates me as much is how many people just… accept this. They accept this weird rationale as if there isn't some alternative way the people who curate the game could run it. "They won't ban a card that was just released!" Why not? Everywhere else, when a game breaks, they fix it. They do that because when your game is broken, people stop playing. Consumer confidence in new cards is already rock bottom, and banning the card they messed up on before everyone buys it is a responsible way to indicate that you respect your customer's investments.

The only justification for not banning Omnath, Locus of Creation is that all that matters is a quarterly profit report, and someone high up thinks banning Omnath will hurt that.

It's unfortunate because I went from 10/10 excited about Standard to approximately a 2. As someone heavily invested in MTG Arena, who writes articles for the game and has never once considered quitting all that since I started in 2008... for the first time this week I thought, "I should just stream Dead by Daylight, Among Us, or Hades instead."

I've heard similar rumblings from other people, motivated by the intense apathy players have for watching yet another broken Standard play out like a slow-motion train crash.
