This Standard format seems to go in circles. What do I mean by this? Basically, different decks are good choices at different times, based solely off of what decks other players choose to play. It's pretty common, and in fact, it's a good thing for a format, because it means that every deck in the format has some flaws.

At this point, it's all about accurately predicting what the metagame is and trying to target it. For weeks now, I've been preaching about Izzet Control being by far and away the best deck in Standard, but my views have shifted. As new cards have entered the format with Innistrad Crimson Vow, and I have been preparing for the Innistrad Championship the state of the current Standard format has also been changing.

The Current Metagame

Izzet Control and Mono White Aggro are the two most popular decks right now. I say this after looking at recent tournament results as well as my own data from playing on the MTG Arena ladder. Of course, this could change in a week or two, but right now these two decks must be respected. That said, both decks have issues that I'd like to highlight.

Izzet Control has trouble both trying to pack a bunch of cards to try and win mirror matches, while also playing enough removal to beat the aggressive decks. It gets to the point where if everyone is trying their best to make their list as good as possible against Izzet decks and Izzet decks have to worry about spending lots of resources on the mirror, the deck and matchups start to deteriorate. It's essentially an arms race, because players want to make their mirror matchups better.

In the case of Mono White, it's a deck very vulnerable to removal spells, and specific creatures like Lier, Disciple of the Drowned. Other decks can add cards — like Cinderclasm, for instance — to shift the matchup in their favor. I'm still not a huge fan of Mono White in this format, even though it's the most played deck right now.

This leaves...everything else. Most of the other decks like Orzhov Control, Jund Treasures, Rakdos Vampires, or black based control decks have bad matchups against either Mono White or Izzet. I decided I wanted to play a deck that targets specifically Mono White and Izzet if possible, and it may shock readers to know that I am actually going back to Mono Green Aggro this weekend. I did poorly with the deck at Worlds, and so it may be history repeating itself.

The Resurgence of Mono Green Aggro

I believe that the deck has a positive matchup against Izzet, and even-ish matchup against Mono White. The data points to the matchup versus Mono White being very poor, but that hasn't been my experience. Games are often about jockeying for position, accurately timing your removal spells, and using the lategame power of cards like Esika's Chariot and Ranger Class to get ahead. The reason to go up to three copies of Devouring Tendrils in the sideboard is to make sure there is a critical amount of removal to attack the white decks with, as you need to be able to kill [[Brutal Cathar][ or an early Luminarch Aspirant
This is a case of playing the games yourself, rather than just relying on data of matches other people have played. I don't believe that the existence of Mono White is a reason to not play Mono Green Aggro.

Playing Mono Green right now is a true metagame call. There are some matchups like Jund Treasures and Orzhov Control that are very bad matchups for the deck. By choosing to play Mono Green you are hoping to either dodge those decks, or assume people won't play them because of their poor Izzet matchups. The time to play Mono Green Aggro is now because it is the single deck in the format that I found to be favorable against the Izzet Control decks. This is the list I am recommending for this weekend:

By cutting the five drops from the maindeck entirely and only having two copies of Wrenn and Seven in the sideboard, you make the deck weaker in the mirror match, but at the same time improve your matchup against Mono White and Izzet Control. You need to find space for the new cards getting added from Crimson Vow, compared to older lists. Ulvenwad Oddity really increases the pressure the deck is able to put on the control and Izzet decks, and that is quite nice.

The deck is also more aggressive than it used to be because it plays a one drop creature. Ascendant Packeader is a solid one drop creature that will often get a counter on it or two, and really plays well with your aggressive gameplan. Getting a classic curve out with an aggro deck starts on turn one, and Ascendant Packleader makes this a possibility. It may seem weird to be playing only three copies, but you do only want to draw one copy in most games. Similarly, Ulvenwald Oddity is a card that you don't want to flood on, as the deck already has four Esika's Chariot and you don't want too many four drop plays.

Overall, there isn't anything particularly innovative about this particular version of Mono Green Aggro. The deck will continue to exist as one of the primary players in this Standard format, but its strength will continue to fluctuate based on what other people are playing. Concerned about mirrors? Add in Unnatural Growth to the maindeck. Worried about Izzet Dragons? Bring back Tangletraps in the sideboard. Little adjustments certainly can and will be made from week to week to this deck, but nothing major.

Beyond Izzet Control, Mono White Aggro, and Mono Green Aggro

If we flash back to the World Championships, the three decks above were the most prominent, yet it was Izzet Dragons and Temur Treasures that made it to the finals of the event. There are certainly many more playable decks in Standard. As a Mono Green player, the deck I am most scared to play against is Orzhov Control. If you are looking for a deck that attacks Mono Green and Mono White while dedicating a lot of the sideboard slots to the Izzet Control matchup, this could be a great choice. I think Orzhov Control is a deck we will see a lot more of in the weeks to come. Here's the list Gregorz Kowalski is taking to the Innistrad Championship:

Edgar, Charmed Groom is probably the single best card in the format against Mono Green Aggro. It blocks well, and then continues to churn out more blockers even after dying. I hate playing against the card, and this list clearly targets Mono Green by choosing to play three copies of it, alongside cards like Blood on the Snow and The Meathook Massacre to sweep creatures away with ease. The deck has all the tools you could ever want in order to beat aggressive creature decks.

If the metagame does shift again and Izzet Control becomes less popular, all of a sudden a deck like Orzhov Control becomes an amazing deck choice. Standard is actually in a pretty good spot, because every deck has another deck they don't want to play against. If a deck becomes too popular it likely means that the decks that are good against it are not being played enough. Based on recent numbers I like Mono Green as the deck for this weekend, as it is what I am playing.
