It'll never cease to amuse me how Planeswalkers get evaluated by the player base these days. I suppose it speaks to the value of the card type that even after they've been around for 15 years, they can still show up and surprise.

Wrenn and Six is a great example. During preview season, the comment I heard most was, "Is it even good?" Shortly after the set released, it utterly took over Modern and Legacy. It single-handedly gave Jund—an archetype long considered dying out—relevance again in a format filled with Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis. Within six months of its release, it was banned in Legacy due to taking over the format.

So turns out, yes, it was even good.

With a project like this, a lot of the external factors that made Wrenn and Six utterly insane aren't present. Fetch lands (aside from the old Mirage versions) aren't around, nor are the dual lands that let those fetches completely facilitate a Candyland manabase. Similarly, Wasteland isn't present, so Wrenn and Six can't be a two-mana wrecking ball for opposing manabases. It plays a lot more fairly.

And, this new two-mana walker became a great shell for one of my all time favorite mechanics: Landfall.

The Game Plan

We want to play lands all the time. Every turn. Depending on our rares, maybe even more than one per turn. Our creatures go from "I guess this is playable" to "How could you possibly expect to stop this" when we hit our land drops, and we even get some of our spells turned on, too.

From early in our curve, we have some monsters we'll want to deploy immediately to benefit from landfall triggers. Snapping Gnarlid, Brushfire Elemental, Plated Geopede, and Valakut Predator should all be played immediately so we can start getting damage in.

Once we have our damage machines on the board, start feeding them. Springbloom Druid, Harrow, or Geomancer's Gambit starts adding more than our normal turn's land drops. Winding Way puts a bunch of lands in our hand to fuel more land drops, or gives us a couple creatures and dumps some lands in the bin to synergize with Groundskeeper or Wrenn and Six to play with. And speaking of Groundskeeper, it can keep the lands flowing if we need to discard any for some of our rares, Fallow Wurm, or Nantuko Cultivator.

Once we're toward the higher end of our curve, we get the real fatties online. Grove Rumbler and Baloth Woodcrasher can crunch the opponent in a single hit. Murasa Behemoth hits similarly hard once we start getting rid of the lands we played. And although this might not be our heaviest hitter, the life gain from Grazing Gladehart can make or break us.

Our removal is pretty decent. The green cards provide us with the artifact and enchantment destruction. Slice in Twain and Artisan's Sorrow are great, if a bit slow, while also providing us with some card advantage/card selection. The red cards give us some of the damage. Searing Blaze, although a bit anemic without a landfall trigger, shines brightly if we can make those drops. Magma Burst has a heavy kicker cost, but the board advantage it can generate is usually worth it. And although there's some extra damage involved, Aftershock is the unusual red removal spell that can take out a creature of any size.

Lastly, the land package is pretty solid. Field of Ruin lets us hit more landfall triggers while getting rid of problematic opposing non basics. Barbarian Ring can help with our removal package. Centaur Garden wins fights. The Ravaged Highlands, Timberland Ruins, and Mountain Valley help fix the mana. The Memorials get us ahead on cards. None of these will completely break our opponents, but they're incremental advantages that make Wrenn and Six dangerous at all times.

The Rares

This is exactly the type of rare that I'd get excited about. Great rate, lets us get more landfall triggers going. Can recycle lands we've already played while letting our other beefy monsters get beefier and get more damage in. This is an extremely exciting card our deck will be happy to see every game.

Rathi Dragon is an iconic rare from the earliest days I started playing. I remember reading columns in the age-old Inquest and Scrye Magazines with the most recent tournament decks. And Rathi Dragon was a mirror-breaking giant fatty that decided epic matchups. In this deck, we get a cheap monster whose rate still holds up great against the competition from today, and we also get a way to send lands to the graveyard to help fuel Wrenn and Six, Groundskeeper, The Mending of Dominaria, Igneous Elemental, and Murasa Behemoth.

If we're buying back lands from the yard every turn with Wrenn and Six or Groundskeeper, it's nice to have some options for them. We'll probably want some landfall triggers, but maybe we need to kill some guys. Maybe our opponent has the board locked down, but their life total can be threatened. Whatever the case, the Seismic Assault can use those recovered lands to burn out the things that concern us, and pave the way for victory, directly or indirectly.

If the tank starts hitting E, The Mending of Dominaria will gas us back up. The first two modes are great, because they help fill the graveyard and find us a potent creature or two to establish or reinforce our board presence. Then Chapter three hits, and I'm going to assume several landfall triggers are going to happen. Once we get all of those landfall triggers, I fully expect the game to be over.

Unsung Hero

Rathi Dragon. Seismic Assault. Fallow Wurm. Harrow. Geomancer's Gambit. Springbloom Druid. Excavating Anurid. Nantuko Cultivator.

What do all of these cards have in common, other than they're all in this deck? They all put lands in the grumper. And some of our effects want them in there, like the Ruination Rioter, the Murasa Behemoth, and the Igneous Elemental. But we'll want to get double duty from those lands and repurpose them. Groundskeeper lets us take the lands we threw away to power up all those aforementioned effects, and use them again for our landfall triggers. It's the longevity and reusability of these resources that will let us compete in long games. And even if our opponent kills off the Groundskeeper, it's a removal spell wasted on a relatively innocuous 1/1 for one instead of a more potent threat.
