Last week, Nick Prince contemplated whether you should play Yorion after the change in the companion mechanic . While his argument is compelling, I'm here to tell you that you don't have to play Yorion, Sky Nomad to be successful in Standard.

So, the companion rules changed and Agent of Treachery and Fires of Invention left the format. What does that mean for Standard? Well, we can look back to Standard before the release of Ikoria and see a lot of those successful decks are still successful. My first impressions of Standard lead me to believe we're going to enter a triangle format, where there are three pillars, all beating one deck and losing to the other. In this instance, the three pillars moving forward are Bant Yorion, Temur Reclamation and Jund Sacrifice. Bant Yorion beats Temur Reclamation, Temur Reclamation beats Jund Sacrifice, and Jund Sacrifice beats Bant Yorion.

This looks similar to Standard before the release of Ikoria, except Jund Sacrifice replaces Rakdos Sacrifice. This shift actually started only a couple of days before the release of Ikoria, when I realized the way to make Rakdos Sacrifice favorable against Bant again was to reintroduce green to the archetype. Typically these games would go far into the late game, and Rakdos Sacrifice was missing key pieces of card advantage to  push through to the finish line. Cards like Trail of Crumbs and Korvold, Fae-Cursed King helped solve this problem.

We see Standard returning back to a similar state it was in before Ikoria because of the hits the other decks in the format took with the B&R announcement last week. Both iterations of Jeskai Fires (Cavalier build and Lukka Yorion build) preyed on almost every deck in the format, and only Bant Yorion was able to contest it.

I am a big fan of both Jund Sacrifice and Temur Reclamation, but for today I'm going to focus on why Jund and Rakdos Sacrifice are the most flexible, resilient, and adaptable decks in Standard.

Why Sacrifice?

If you want to beat Bant, Jund is the way to go. Bant was the most popular deck starting out the week after the Fires of Invention and Agent of Treachery ban. Why? Because the deck is still doing powerful things, and the new companion rule does not hurt Yorion, Sky Nomad as much as the other companions. Jund Sacrifice takes the classic Cauldron Familiar and Witch's Oven combo, but also includes a lot of other cards that enable card advantage and synergize well with the rest of the deck.

Rakdos Sacrifice works in a similar way, however this version favors aggression to card advantage. With cards like Robber of the Rich, Dreadhorde Butcher, and Midnight Reaper, you will still fare well against Bant Yorion. Robber of the Rich is an aggressive card that is notorious for being strong against various Breeding Pool decks. Essentially with this version, you're going to want to get aggressive before the Bant player can stabilize, then finish them off after they board wipe with Cauldron Familiar, Mayhem Devil, or one of your haste creatures.

Whichever version of Sacrifice you prefer, you'll do well if you expect a lot of Bant Yorion. However, this week I've been noticing a lot more Sultai Midrange and Temur Reclamation on the Arena ladder, due to the uptick in Jund Sacrifice. Given how popular these other decks have become, you may need to shift into Rakdos Sacrifice again. While Rakdos Sacrifice does not magically make these matchups favored, I would definitely rather be on Rakdos Sacrifice facing down Sultai Midrange or Temur Reclamation than Jund Sacrifice. This is because of some of the cards I've already mentioned like Robber of the Rich and Dreadhorde Butcher

It's true that you have fewer options with your sideboard by cutting out green; you lose access to Cindervines, Wilt and Return to Nature. However, against Temur Reclamation I don't believe these helped as much as anyone wanted them to.

These are the respective decks I would register if I were going to play Jund Sacrifice or Rakdos Sacrifice this weekend:

The Temur Reclamation Matchup

With Jund Sacrifice

The reason Jund Sacrifice often struggles in this matchup is because Jund is a tap-out deck that doesn't put enough pressure on Temur Reclamation before they have access to their interactive spells. You also do not have a good way of interacting with Wilderness Reclamation or their combo during game one.

I like to approach the matchup with the Cauldron Familiar combo, trying to get key cards to resolve, such as Trail of Crumbs. After that, running out various spells into their countermagic in hopes of resolving Korvold, Fae-Cursed King or Bolas's Citadel are real ways to try to close out the game before the Reclamation player can kill you. You will want to kill your opponent the turn you resolve Bolas's Citadel, so some library manipulation may be required. Fabled Passage, Woe Strider, Trail of Crumbs or Priest of Forgotten Gods can all help with that.

After sideboarding you want to focus on casting all your copies of Duress and Cindervines. Some people have been favoring Thought Distortion, but you are not really a ramp deck, so it might not matter by the time you can cast it. I typically like to side out slower cards and some copies of Claim the Firstborn because the only target is Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath

With Rakdos Sacrifice

I like to be aggressive in this matchup. You can often find yourself in a position to double spell each turn, which is hard for Temur Rec to have multiple counters or removal for. Like Jund, you still have a hard time interacting with Wilderness Reclamation game one, but you get to try to kill them before it matters. I value getting some sacrifice sources on the board before over-extending into a boardwipe (which is often Storm's Wrath or Flame Sweep). Robber of the Rich is one of the best cards in this matchup; often your opponent will be forced to deal with the Robber of the Rich before combat, allowing you to resolve more spells during main phase two.

Your sideboard is weaker against Temur Rec than Jund's sideboard is, but again, you are mostly trying to be an aggro deck in this matchup and not interact with your opponent excessively. However, you do have access to Drill Bit (or Duress) and Pharika's Libation. These are cards you can play in tandem with your aggressive cards to ensure some interaction, while not disrupting your main plan in the matchup. I typically like to side out slower cards like both Midnight Reaper, some Mayhem Devil, and Call of the Death-Dwellers to maximize my game plan.

The Sultai Midrange Matchup

This matchup feels rough with both Jund and Rakdos Sacrifice. Sultai is hard to attack because it functions on multiple and very different axes. It has hand-hate, Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, Nissa, Who Shakes the World and Casualties of War, all of which can be a huge problem for sacrifice decks to answer. Not to mention Cry of the Carnarium in the sideboard (which you should play around by sacrificing your Cauldron Familiar on your turn, then bringing it back on your opponent's end step). That being said, both decks can follow a specific game plan to reach victory.

With Jund Sacrifice

Jund Sacrifice aims to play the long game against Sultai Midrange. This typically means generating enough card advantage and board presence to end up winning the game with Korvold, Fae-Cursed King or Bolas's Citadel. Sultai is typically only playing one threat a turn, so it's common to rely on Priest of Forgotten Gods in game one… if it survives. Did I mention Sultai is also packed full of removal? Going wide with Jund Sacrifice is strong in game one and often only contested by Nissa, Who Shakes the World. All that being said, game one isn't too bad, and you can often grind out wins, even through a detrimental Casualties of War

The sideboard games get harder because of the added removal and boardwipes out of Sultai's sideboard. Sideboarding against Sultai is difficult because of all the different axes the deck functions from. I typically like Soul-Guide Lantern for Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and Tamiyo, Collector of Tales, extra Korvold, Fae-Cursed King for card advantage, and Duress to hit cards like Casualties of War and Nissa, Who Shakes the World. You usually want to stick to the same plan as game one, but with added ways to interact with your opponent while being cautious of overextending into Cry of the Carnarium

With Rakdos Sacrifice

I tend to like this matchup in game one, because we can often get an aggressive start and win the game before our opponent can stabilize. Robber of the Rich is once again an all-star in this matchup, retaining card advantage and even utilizing your opponent's spells against them. A lot of what I said in the Jund section remains true for game one here; Priest of Forgotten Gods is powerful, Casualties of War can lead to some blowouts, and your opponent will try to stabilize with Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath. However, instead of wanting to go into the late game, you want to get aggressive and end the game before your opponent can stabilize because you don't run game-ending cards like Korvold, Fae-Cursed King or Bolas's Citadel.

Post-sideboard you are much weaker to Cry the Carnarium than your Jund counterparts. Also, you don't have many cards you want to side in. Once again, I would bring in Drill Bit (or Duress) to hit your opponent's payoff cards. I would also bring in Act of Treason to have extra instances of stealing your opponent's Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and Hydroid Krasis. Rakdos might have some edge in this matchup during game one compared to Jund, however you'll really have to fight to win a post-board game against Sultai Midrange considering every card in their deck is great against you.

The Bant Yorion Matchup

The last matchup I'm going to cover is Bant Yorion. Bant Yorion was initially my reason for wanting to play Jund Sacrifice in the first place. Overall, I think Bant has strayed away from trying to beat sacrifice decks, so Rakdos might have an advantage again, but if you really want to beat Bant, you should play Jund.

With Jund Sacrifice

In game one, you have a similar game plan against Bant as you did against Sultai, except you trade Casualties of War and hand-hate for countermagic and Teferi, Time Raveler. These are typically easier to deal with because Teferi isn't very good against either sacrifice deck. You really want to get one of your card advantage engines to resolve, most commonly Trail of Crumbs. You have too many different things that Bant needs to deal with, and you can quickly rebuild after a board wipe because of all the adventure cards.

Sideboard games just get better. You get access to even more copies of Korvold, Fae-Cursed King, Duress and Soul-Guide Lantern for Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and Elspeth Conquers Death. Your opponent will likely try to interact more and have more board wipes post-board, but your plan largely stays the same, and you are still favored post-board.

With Rakdos Sacrifice

Rakdos Sacrifice started off favored against Bant Sacrifice until they tailored their sideboard to beat Rakdos Sacrifice. However, there has been a huge down-tick in Devout Decree in the Bant sideboard, so this matchup might not be as bad as it previously was. The only card you really care about in this matchup is Shatter the Sky, so I wouldn't over-extend without a Midnight Reaper in play. Luckily, you can rebuild after a boardwipe with Woe Strider, Cauldron Familiar, Call of the Death-Dwellers and Gutterbones. Once again, you are the aggressor in the matchup, and Robber of the Rich is a fantastic Magic card.

Post-board I like Drill Bits and Pharika's Libation. These help deal with Elspeth Conquers Death, Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, and even Dream Trawler. Speaking of Dream Trawler, that's another thing that started to push Rakdos Sacrifice out of the meta, but without multiple copies of that card in Bant anymore, Rakdos Sacrifice has gotten a lot better in the head-to-head.

* * *

I started the week believing that Jund Sacrifice was the way to be this weekend heading into the Players Tour, however I am much more inclined to play Rakdos Sacrifice now. Both decks have their merits, and as is often the case in Standard, you have to pick your spots and decide which decks you would like to beat. After that, you can tailor your sideboard to help with the rest of the matchups. Really, all this is to say, you truly don't HAVE to play Yorion.
