Kia ora! This week we're looking at Aster Phoenix from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.

Aster was introduced with a lot of fanfare in the second season of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX as a new rival for Jaden. Aster had ties to Sartorius, the main villain of the season, although his role was greatly diminished in the following seasons after he reclaimed the Ultimate Destiny card, Destiny HERO - Plasma

Season 3 saw him absent from the first dimensional crisis. He joined forces with Zane in the second after accidentally getting dragged into the other dimension, while in the Japan-only Season 4 he served as a mentor to Chazz of all characters.

Aster had been sponsored by the Senrigen Group, who had arranged for the Final Destiny card to be created, the Fusion Monster Destiny End Dragoon, but while Chazz was under Aster's employment, the card vanished. Aster's career was suddenly put in jeopardy. Chazz and Aster were forced to Duel by Mike, a ratings-hungry producer, and Aster pulled out all the stops of his deck against Chazz, including Destiny HERO - Dreadmaster, Destiny HERO - Plasma, and Destiny End Dragoon itself after Jaden found the card hanging around Mike's neck in a stunt involving Pharaoh the cat's fleas.

I keep saying that Yu-Gi-Oh! is weird, but I also keep forgetting just how weird it can get.

This week's Episode Deck will focus on Aster's Destiny End Dragoon, but we'll also include support for his other aces: Destiny HERO - Dreadmaster, Destiny HERO - Dogma, and the Ultimate Destiny card, Destiny HERO - Plasma, which just received an excellent alternate art in Maximum Gold: El Dorado.

Ideally, we want to get to Fusion Destiny to Fusion Summon Destiny End Dragoon and failing that, we'll focus on Destiny HERO - Plasma. Aster also acquired D - Force when he retrieved Destiny HERO - Plasma from The D, which could be placed face-up on top of the deck to make Plasma immune to card effects. 

That would be a rulings nightmare in the TCG, so the newly-released version from Brothers of Legend is just a Continuous Spell that can search or retrieve Destiny HERO - Plasma and provide your field with targeting immunity. It also adds in the double-attack of D - Acceleration from Aster's Duel with Chazz, with thankfully none of the negatives of the latter card.

To get Destiny HERO - Plasma or Destiny HERO - Dogma out, we'll run three Destiny HERO - Drilldark that Aster used in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V, three D Cubed, three Destiny HERO - Denier and Destiny HERO - Malicious to quickly summon three monsters. We'll also put in two Destiny HERO - Celestial and the obligatory three Destiny Draw and single Destiny HERO - Disk Commander to help us draw for Fusion Destiny or D - Force

An excellent combo if you can pull it off is to Fusion Summon Destiny End Dragoon and then use D - Force to bring the Destiny HERO - Plasma that you fused back to your hand. Summon Plasma and you'll have two extremely powerful Destiny cards immune to targeting, while Plasma negates the abilities of all your opponent's monsters! Don't worry too much if Destiny End Dragoon is destroyed, since its revival effect only cares that it's in the graveyard, not how it was sent there.

While we'll include three Clock Tower Prison, these days a duel will usually be over before it counts down unless you also draw Eternal Dread or Destiny HERO - Dread Servant. If you want to draw Destiny HERO - Dread Servant you can search it with Destiny HERO - Denier

Don't think this is the only way to build Destiny HEROes either! Aster's appearance in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V made way for many strong Fusion Monsters, including Destiny HERO - Destroyer Phoenix Enforcer from Burst of Destiny, a card making waves in the competitive formats. Just make sure you don't use Destiny HERO - Dominator in a Remote Duel!
